Description

We're sharing an episode of our Pantsuit Politics Premium show, More to Say, that Beth released earlier this week. To support the show and get access to content like this multiple times each week, subscribe to our Premium content on our Patreon page or Apple Podcasts Subscriptions. On September 13, 20 couples got married in a ceremony on the National Mall. It was both a celebration and a protest. The couples included people with disabilities who risk losing life-sustaining benefits by marrying people who are not disabled. Today, we're talking about the marriage penalties written into federal law and how those penalties can be eliminated. If this episode speaks to you, I hope you'll consider sending a note to your representative today. It can be straightforward: "I learned about marriage penalties in Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid regulations on a podcast. This seems wrong to me. I hope you will look into and support the Marriage Equality for Disabled Adults Act (HR 6405) introduced last January by Rep. Jimmy Panetta."RESOURCES:What’s Next In ‘Marriage Equality’ For People With Disabilities?’ (Forbes)Disabled Couples Make a Plea for Marriage Equality at Washington Rally (The New York Times)Supplemental Security Income (SSI)Disabled Adult Child (DAC) Marriage PenaltySeeking Marriage Equality for People With Disabilities (The New York Times)Rep.
