Description

Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com Malo and welcome to Episode 69 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika peoples sports on this beautiful bright and sunny Wednesday morning 07 September 2022 - coming to you from paradise on the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In rugby – sad news, crack Fiji-born French Centre, Virimi Vakatawa has had to end his professional rugby career in France due to a serious heart condition. At a media conference on Tuesday, visibly moved, France Coach Fabien Galthié, alongside Racing92 Club President Jacky Lorenzetti, Club Head Coach Laurent Travers and Vakatawa, struggled to hold back the tears as he paid tribute to the 30-year-old Fijian, whom many consider to be one of the best players in the world. "Fate meant that Virimi played his last three matches with the Blues in Japan, he shared with great emotion," Galthié said. "When you play high-level rugby, you know that it's something that can happen. He was a key player in our adventure, in our history, he was great. This example, we must share it with our children and tell them to enjoy each match as if it were the last." In rugby league – our world famous NRL Finals Tips Week 1: The Parramatta Eels to papaya the Panthers this Friday and on Saturday in Melbourne the Storm to Sambuca the Raiders, the Cowboys to Savlon the Sharks in Sydney and on Sunday, the Rabbitohs to Rambo the Roosters at Allianz Stadium. In the AFL – you know that funny game skinny Aussie guys play wearing really tight shorts? Well the AFL has signed the richest TV deal in Australian sports history with the incumbent holders of their broadcasting rights, FOXtel and SEVEN worth A$4.5Billion over seven years from 2025. Apparently NINE offered A$500Million-a-year for the free-to-air rights but missed out. Unfortunately, despite all their riches, the AFL has a serious racism problem. Yesterday the West Coast Eagles issued a statement strongly condemning the latest spineless racial attack on their Fijian superstar Nic Naitanui on social media. The post targeting Nic Naitanui today is appalling, offensive on the highest possible level and once again illustrates how far we have to go in educating society that attacks of this nature are intolerable, the statement said. It continued, the vast majority of Australians understand the hurt and offence that abhorrent posts of this nature cause but unfortunately a small minority persists with these vile social media posts. The statement ends with - we all have a responsibility to call it out and take a zero tolerance position on this issue. In boxing – Tyson Fury has offered Anthony Joshua 40% of a multi-million pound purse if he agrees to a blockbuster British Heavyweight title fight later this year. Never one to shy away from the spotlight, Fury called out AJ on social media on Monday after revealing that he won't wait until 2023 to fight Oleksandr Usyk. Anthony Joshua responded by saying he will be "ready in December," This is the all-British clash that boxing fans have been desperate to see for years BUT bloody AJ kept losing – first to Mexican Michelin Man Andy Ruiz and now to the Ukraine Cossack Warrior Oleksandr Usyk. In tennis – rising US women’s tennis star, Jessica Pegula is through to the US Tennis quarterfinals, but get this - the US$2.5Million prize money pales when compared to her family’s US$6.7Billion net worth, of which she is the heiress. So imagine this – Jessica Pegula and awful Aussie Nick Kyrgios meet in the tunnel at the US Open quarterfinals and fall head over heels in love. Margaret Court marries them – seriously she is a pastor of her fundamentalist Christian church and Serena and Venus Williams are the flower girls! YAY another Hollywood blockbuster!
