Welcome to a new segment on the show! The plan here is to try and feature books and authors on a more regular basis that capture the game from a wider perspective, straying a bit beyond the nitty-gritty of the international game – something like that. With all that in mind, we come to our author today, Tom Hicks. He's a man who has, in many ways, led a charmed life as a player. A First Class skipper by virtue of his alma mater, Oxford University, and nearly 20 years duking it out for Dorset in the minor counties, not to mention more games at Lord’s than any amateur could ever wish, at times it feels like a bit of a lovely fairytale. Yet there’s an anonymity to Tom's time as well, reflected in the name of his most enjoyable memoir: 'Bowler's Name? The Life of a Cricketing Also-Ran.'
