Battle Royale was released in Japan during 2000 and immediately faced controversy for the portrayal of child violence. Certain Japanese government officials tried to ban the movie (as they had tried to ban the book of the same name) but this only led to increased popularity. The film became a hit in Japan and won multiple Japanese Oscars and became an instant cult-classic in the West. Battle Royale is the story of Katniss Everdeen...sorry, it was too easy! Battle Royale is the story of a future totalitarian Japan in which one school class is selected each year to participate in the Battle Royale where one classmate must survive after all others have died. The students have to decide how what strategy to use to escape the Battle Royale and quick wits and quick trigger fingers are necessary to come out on top. We follow Shuya as he loses friends and tries to make sense of the game and protect the girl he loves.
