Description

Shevi Samet and I get real about how observing Taharas Hamishpacha (Jewish Family Purity laws), is challenging for many. Being niddah in labor, birth and the postpartum period can present additional struggles, especially considering the large amount of support many new mothers need. Shevi is ever empathic toward those who experience these challenges and she doesn’t whitewash their experiences, but in her extraordinarily eloquent way, manages to give some thoughtful perspectives on getting through this time. This episode is helpful to both new mothers and anyone who observes Taharas Hamishpacha.    Shevi is an educator for 15 years and a student for even longer. She is a high school teacher, Jewish bridal educator (aka kallah teacher) and relationship mentor. Her style is very much reflective of her personality and her understanding of young women both in and out of the classroom. It is energetic and engaging, and focuses on text based concepts that explore fundamental topics specifically as they relate to relationships and women in Judaism. True to her essence, she runs the @itsalearninglife Instagram account, a space which provides Jewish women with access to thought provoking Torah ideas, knowledge and inspiration. After years of NY living, she struggles to maintain her Canadian accent, however the reputable warmth and sincerity of her hometown have remained with her. You can reach her by email through sametshevi@gmail.com.   To continue the conversation and learn more about similar topics, check out the Yoledet Academy Instagram community.     Promo codes for this episode’s sponsors:   7th Day Shine - natural, chemical and paraben free makeup specially formulated for permissible application on Shabbos. Unpopular opinion: A healthy mom and healthy baby are NOT enough. Why don't we pay attention to a mother's experience and perceptions of her birth enough? I'm an L&D nurse revealing insider secrets that you won't learn in your standard childbirth ed class. We explore every facet (from opposite extremes) of not just birth, but the experience of womanhood and childbearing. Along with women sharing their experiences vulnerably, a slew of experts gift us with knowledge we never thought we needed. I throw in an extra layer to the discussion by exploring the implications of Judaism and Jewish culture on the reproductive experience. This show spans way beyond pregnancy and birth, with topics on sex, birth control, birth trauma, perinatal mental health, postpartum realities, breastfeeding, sleep training, diet culture, infertility, realities of our healthcare system, Jewish law, and so much more.
