Sandy Smith, the mother of Stephen Smith, is seeking answers in the wake of the conviction of Alex Murdaugh for the murder of his wife and son. Six years prior, Stephen was found dead on a remote road near the Murdaugh family's estate in South Carolina. Before law enforcement confirmed Stephen's death, Randy Murdaugh, Alex's older brother, called the Smith family offering help in investigating. The official cause of death was listed as blunt force trauma, but Sandy questions the initial ruling of a hit-and-run and believes her son was murdered. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division reopened a probe into Stephen's death in June 2021. Despite rumors of a romantic relationship with Buster Murdaugh, Sandy doesn't believe that was the case.
