The ideas just weren't coming to guitarist Tony Iommi, and without his massive guitar riffs… well, there just wasn't any Black Sabbath. Weeks were wasted in the studio until he stumbled onto the riff that became "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath", and then they were off to the races.
