The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr. Sylvia Hood Washington. The Chief Environmental Research Scientist at Environmental Health Research Associates, Dr. Washington is an environmental epidemiologist, environmental engineer and environmental historian with 30 years of research experience working on the impact of industrial pollution on human health and ecosystems. This spring we read her 2004 publication, Packing Them In: An Archaeology of Environmental Racism in Chicago, 1865-1954. The book does a fabulous job detailing the long and violent history of compressing huge numbers of black Chicagoans into sub-standard living conditions that destroy health.
