As it turns out, maybe sneakers is ok, and the actual problem is with spending habits and attitude towards spending.  I'm no expert, but it feels like money habits observed and developed as a child seem to creep up and play a role in how I spend today.  If I'm not blowing money on one thing, it's something else.  But self-awareness of this is key to breaking the cycle.
