Beraisa: An egg: A safek is forbidden and even if it is mixed in with a thousand others, it does not become battel.Challenge: Why does a mixture not become battel? You might suggest that an egg is considered too important to become battel.This is dependent on your reading of a Mishna: If you read it “anything that is counted”, eggs are sometimes sold by count. But if you read it “things that are counted”, eggs are not always sold by count and wouldn’t be considered important enough to not be battel.
Rav Papa: It is the Tanna of “a litra of dried figs” who holds that anything counted, even an issur D’Rabbanan is not battel.
Mishna: A litra of dried [tevel] figs that was pressed on top of a barrel, or keg full of kosher figs, and he doesn’t remember into which barrel it was pressed.Rabbi Meir: Rabbi Eliezer: The complete contents of the barrels are counted towards bittul [in this case bittul of tevel/terumah which requires one hundred. Although the lower part of the barrels are not actually part of the safek, in reality bittul works as long as there is a majority of better, only the Chachomim required one hundred and in this case they were lenient]. Rabbi Yehoshua: If there are one hundred barrel tops, it is battel, otherwise, all tops are forbidden while the rest of the barrels [which are not part of the safek] are permitted.Rabbi Yehuda: Rabbi Eliezer: If there are one hundred barrel tops, it is battel, otherwise, all tops are forbidden while the rest of the barrels are permitted. Rabbi Yehoshua: Even if there are three hundred barrel tops [it’s a guzma], it cannot become battel [this opinion then is the “Tanna of litra ketzios”].If the ketzios were pressed into a barrel but it is not known which barrel, everyone agrees that it can become battel.
Challenge: What does that mean “everyone agrees”? This is the case they’re arguing about!
Rav Papa: It should read “If the ketzios were pressed into a barrel but it is not recognizable in the barrel, it has become amalgamatged, everyone agrees that it can become battel.”
