Description
We're joined by writer Julia Blunck to discuss the two main contenders to the Brazilian presidency, former President and centre-left icon Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and far-right incumbent Jair Bolsonaro. With this election widely considered one of the most significant of the year, we're exploring the lives and backgrounds of these two figures, who were born in the same state but came from completely different worlds. While Lula became one of the country's most significant figures and served two successful terms as President, Bolsonaro remained for years a reactionary figure of mockery in Brazilian politics. But in 2018, with Lula's PT hobbled by corruption scandals, Bolsonaro won the election and pursued a hard right and antidemocratic agenda. However, in 2022 he must face a returning Lula, one of Latin America's most skilful political operators.
