Description

Talking history while sipping Toki Highballs. On a warm August afternoon in 1939, Alexandria (Va.) Library staff and patrons watched as a young African American entered and asked to register for a library card. When he was refused, he bravely picked up a book, took a seat, and began to read. This bold act was the beginning of one of America's first sit-ins and one of the earliest precursors of the strategies used during the civil rights movement decades later.  In the first epi of our four-part ICON Series, guest host John Taylor Chapman – Alexandria’s Night Mayor and local historian – welcomes Rose T. Dawson, Exe. Dir. of the Alexandria Library. Tune in for a lively and empowering conversation about this pioneering use of nonviolent direct action to demand equal rights for African Americans. Talking history while sipping cocktails — you’ve never had a history class like this! Looking another cocktail to accompany your history lesson? Then head over to our library of libations for the right recipe to get you in the mood. Don't forget to follow, download and review to share your thoughts about the show!
