It was first published in 1841. The author is unknown, but the loch is the largest loch in Scotland. I’ve heard a few different stories about the origins. Wikipedia lists the most-popular one being that is Jacobite song. It says there are references to it with the date 1746 attached. That was the year the Bonnie Prince Charlie’s rebellion ended. They also have an additional verse that I’ve never seen used. O braw Charlie Stewart, dear true, true heart, Wha could refuse thee protection, Like the weeping birk on the wild hillside, How graceful he looked in dejection Nevertheless, the song is about a Scottish soldier far away in France who tells a friend to “take the high road” home. The “high road” is of course life, and a regular path to Scotland. The “low road” is about dying and having his spirit head home.
