Description

?At 28-5 and 78-5 in their first two ODIs against England last month, Ireland found themselves looking at the prospect of heavy defeats even before they could come out to have a bowl. Batting at seven, out walks Curtis Campher. In his first two internationals for the side, the allrounder dragged his side back into the games with two fluent half centuries before contributing vital wickets to give Ireland decent prospects of victory. If we impose the stringent cutoff of a minimum of one game played, he possesses one of the highest One Day International batting averages of all time at 127.
However, Curtis didn't grow up in the verdant surroundings of Galway or Cork like his teammates. Born and raised in Johannesburg, he came through the ranks at Gauteng and South Africa U19s.  Qualifying for Ireland through his grandmother, he's taken a leap of faith which, as it stands, appears to be paying off.
Bertie and Max sat down with him to chat about his breakthrough series, coming into the Irish team, and he offers more of an outsider's perspective as to how Irish cricket appears to be building a charge into world cricket. We find out why he left South Africa for a relative cricket backwater, being part of the dawn of Irish Test cricketers, how he finds the famous Irish craic, and whether he does in fact have a ball with Tom Banton's name on it.
