Season 02 : Deep South Episode 03 : Habitation Haydel : Wallace, LA Plantations in the deep south during the period before the civil war were massive and complex operations. They were the mega corporations of the times. They specialized in specific cash crops such as cotton, tobacco and sugar cane. They also had a tremendous need for labor, and at this time in American history, that meant slave labor. Understandably, there were many attempts by slave laborers to find ways of fleeing these plantation ending their lives of servitude.
