He relishes kidnapping overweight women, depriving them of food for weeks, killing and then skinning them dumping the victims in nearby rivers. As for the women’s skin, Buffalo Bill makes them into a “woman suit” for himself. This prods one to ask, “Is there a real Buffalo Bill who exists somewhere in the world?” The answer is partly “yes” because it turns out that Harris developed Buffalo Bill as a composite character – meaning, he based it not just on one, neither 2 nor 3, but six real-life serial killers. And one of them was Gary M. Heidnik who kidnapped, raped and tortured six women while holding them prisoner in a pit. He was finally sentenced to death, and executed by lethal injection on July 6, 1999 at age 55.
