Description

In this episode I explain what you need to do to stop your puppy from jumping on people. This is broken down into two parts: 1) puppy jumping own people out on a walk and 2) puppy jumping on people coming in the house. Two things to do right now to help stop the behavior are 1) stop reinforcing the jumping and 2) stop allowing the puppy to reverse the behavior by not putting it in a position to have access to the stimulus (people) when it’s over excited. We want to make this behavior extinct, however be aware of extinction bursts. To make the jumping extinct, start by no longer reinforcing the jumping. You have to control excitement and behavior before it escalates out of control. We want to create alternative behaviors to the jumping. For the two situations previously mentioned, here is how you do that:Teach puppy that while on walks and it sees people, to lie down and wait for you to release them to interact with people. (Give example with dixie) Teach puppy to go to place and use a down-stay and release puppy to great house guest under your guidance, when puppy is calm.
