Description

Wednesday would have been the 59th birthday of Justin Fashanu.

The footballer was the first black player to earn a one-million pound transfer fee – and played for twenty-two clubs in a career that spanned two decades.

Fashanu was also the first male English professional to come out as gay while playing – and became the victim of constant crowd abuse as a result.

Ultimately, Fashanu took his own life – but on Wednesday, he’s being posthumously inducted into the National Football Museum’s Hall of Fame for his contributions to the sport.

His niece Amal will be accepting the honour on his behalf – and joins us for this powerful, poignant episode on her uncle’s legacy, as well as her memories of him as a man. There’s so much on the agenda – from visibility to inclusivity to mental health – and we think this is an interview that you won’t forget any time soon.
