Description

Pride and Prejudice is the most famous of Jane Austen’s novels, and its opening line is one of the most famous in English literature - “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” It was first published in 1813 and follows the main character Elizabeth Bennet as she works her way through issues of manners, upbringing, morality, education and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of early 19th-century England. Elizabeth is the second of five daughters of a country gentleman, living near the fictional town of Meryton in Hertfordshire, near London.Pride and Prejudice has consistently appeared near the top of lists of "most-loved books" among literary scholars and the reading public, and has become one of the most popular novels and a classic in English literature.
