Description

For this week’s episode, we are chatting with Ray Hemachandra, who is the father of Nicholas Hemachandra, a 19-year-old autistic and intellectually disabled young man. Ray and his son are based in western North Carolina, where he speaks and writes about autism and neurodiversity. In this episode, we take a deep dive into neurodiversity and what he refers to as authentic self-determination. This is a great episode for parents and professionals supporting individuals on the spectrum who are growing up because supporting self-determination and support networks are important well before an autistic person becomes an adult.

How do we prepare for and navigate adulthood? What are the resources out there that can help me? How can we all work together to promote the success of autistic people in the workplace, community, and at school? This podcast is an extension of the Autism Grown Up Resource Center for autistic adults, families, and professionals. Note that the needs of the autism community are HUGE and we are a small non-profit just getting started with resources. Not every episode may be for you and we aim to provide ideas and suggestions for individualization. Pick and choose what you need!
