The Adi Parva, or Book of the Beginning, is the first of the Mahabharata's eighteen books. The Sanskrit term "adi"  literally means "first." Traditionally, Adi Parva has 19 sub-books and 236 adhyayas (chapters). Adi Parva comprises 19 sub-books and 225 chapters in the critical edition.
