Description

Welcome to the Mini-Break powered by Midwest Sports, your daily podcast for the biggest storylines, results, and controversies from the tennis world.
This week we welcomed MaliVai Washington to “Getting to The Point” powered by ArrowBar. We had an extremely engaging conversation about junior tennis, college tennis, his pro career, his foundation, fitness and nutrition, and even worked in that famous Wimbledon streaker.
Mal was born into a passionate tennis family and enjoyed a successful junior career before moving on to an All-American career at the University of Michigan. Mal recounts the benefits of college tennis and the great friendships he forged while developing his game well enough to turn pro after his junior year. Much of his inspiration came from watching fellow young americans like Agassi and Sampras doing so well on the pro stage.
Always a physical specimen, Mal emphasized how fitness was always important to him and that he vowed to never lose a match due to fitness. He did honestly point out that he did not focus as well on nutrition as he could have. He tried to eat the right stuff but even admitted to eating Powerbars on court because he didn’t know what he should eat!
MaliVai has spent almost 25 years now on his legacy project, the Malivai Washington Youth Foundation in Jacksonville, Florida. The foundation is a tennis and life skills foundation helping at risk youth. It has expanded from a small after school tennis program into a full program with life skills through not just tennis but computer labs, tutoring, a new teen center.
As a friend of Mal’s , ArrowBar founder Mark Arrowsmith’s biggest take away was of course the fact that MaliVai is the only person in his family not to have won the Flint Junior Open.
