A Study in Scarlet was one of four full-length novels that Conan Doyle wrote using Sherlock Holmes as the central character, and this was his first Sherlock Holmes story. It begins as Dr. Watson, having just returned to London after the war in Afghanistan, is seeking a place to live, and a friend recommends Sherlock Holmes to him. The friendship and residence at Baker Street works, and Watson is able to help solve a crime along with Holmes.
