Description
We’re taking our first jump into scripted film territory. Will Smith stars as the father, and sometimes coach of, Venus and Serena Williams in this 2021 “definitely-not-a-documentary” biographical film. Does the film do justice to the amazing rise of the Williams sisters or is it mostly a Will Smith film awards-baiting vehicle? Is the film sending a message about overbearing “sports parents” or does it draw a line about future stars getting too much too soon? Is their success a triumph over racial boundaries? Was some amount of their suffering engineered by their father? How much dramatic license was taken here? We take a close look at this largely well-received film and try to sort out our feeling about the intent versus the execution. Dean Saddoris of Caffeine & Kilos joined us in this discussion. You can find Dean on IG @deansaddoris.ck and at caffeineandkilos.com. You can see this film at theaters and on HBOMax. ____ Check out our gym (Third Street Barbell) at ThirdStreetBarbell.com and subscribe for updates about our apparel line at 3sb.co!
