The Enchanted Bluff by Willa Cather is a wistful tale narrated by one of 5 Midwestern boys who , as friends, camped out by a river in their high school days and talked about a mysterious mesa that one of the boys had heard of. The narrator recalls the night under the stars and then explains what happened to each of the boys in later life and whether or not their dreams of exploring that bluff were ever fulfilled.
