Description
Growing up as the child of liberal parents in Seattle, Jessica Bennett may have spent her formative years steeped in a culture of feminism, but she didn’t feel the need to claim the title of feminist until she was faced with the tangible gender disparities that arose during her first job as a staff writer at Newsweek in New York. Spurred by inexcusable evidence of wage discrepancy and story stealing, Jessica banded with other women in the company, only to discover Newsweek’s 40+ year history of discrimination against women.
Finding her niche in activism-led journalism, Jessica has authored two books, received awards for her coverage of the LGBTQ+ community, been named the first ever gender editor of The New York Times, and launched numerous projects on gender politics and cultural trends. Still working to manage the demon known as “imposter syndrome” despite her many accolades, Jessica continues in her mission to bring change into the spaces that are not yet considered safe for women and marginalized communities.
