The Context of White Supremacy hosts the third study session on Romain Gary's White Dog. A White man born in eastern Europe, Gary piloted jets in World War II and authored a number of top selling french novels before committing suicide in 1980. We'll discuss his 1970 global top-seller, White Dog - which is allegedly an autobiography. The book centers on a white German shepherd Gary finds while visiting the United States. The vagrant canine is beloved by the entire family and is treated as part of the clan. But Gary quickly notices the hound becomes hostile and immediately attacks when black people appear. During last week's session, met the White owners of the racist hound. It's an older White man Gary thinks is a swell fella, awesome grandfather, and the type of guy who makes the world go around. This grandpa shares that he and his son trained generations of police dogs. His White son is moving to California to open a dog kennel because of the alleged booming crime. Gary and his wife, Jean Seberg, quarrel about her so called anti-racist efforts. Seberg's brother dies in automobile accident when he's only 18. They visit the Iowa town to support her grieving family, but the whole sundown town full of Whites are delirious about a White Woman who's married a black male. From here...
