Steven Fine, a Jewish history professor at Yeshiva University and the author of "The Menorah: From the Bible to Modern Israel," analyzes the twists and turns in the millennia-long history of the "Jewish holy grail." This season of the Tel Aviv Review is made possible by The Van Leer Jerusalem Institute, which promotes humanistic, democratic, and liberal values in the social discourse in Israel.
