Everton were actually one of the key five drivers in forming the then-Premiership but looked ill-equipped to deal with the change, after many senior players followed Howard Kendell out the door in the late 80s and early 90s. There were four other teams in the mix for relegation as the final round of fixtures arrived and, after going 2-0 down against Wimbledon, all hope looked lost - but Everton performed the impossible.
