Benjamin "Pitchfork" Tillman is one of South Carolina's most revered sons. He's a former governor, US senator, co-founder of Clemson University and Winthrop University, and a "noted white supremacist who unapologetically advocated lynching any black who tried to vote." He gloated about torturing black citizens and inspired White Supremacist legal codes across the country. This week, in what's being hailed a monumental victory, Governor Nikki Haley and the South Carolina legislature banished the Confederate flag from the Capitol grounds.
