A professor at the University of California San Francisco department of medicine, Dr. Grubbs is a kidney specialist with a medical degree from Duke University. Not limited to being a medical doctor, black mother and wife, Dr. Grubbs moonlights as a creative non-fiction writer. Weeks ago, she visited Seattle, Washington to discuss her new book, Hundreds of Interlaced Fingers: A Kidney Doctor's Search for the Perfect Match. Grubbs describes the romance between she and her now-husband, Richard. He suffered from kidney failure when they first met, and witnessing his aguish with dialysis treatment and shabby care from White doctors helped the Grubbs better understand how racism decimates black patients.
