The Context of White Supremacy hosts the sixth study session on Angie Thomas's historically popular young adult novel, The Hate U Give. Reportedly inspired by the 2009 police killing of Oscar Grant, Thomas's work "debuted at the top of The New York Timesâ??s Young Adult best-seller list, and has drawn ecstatic praise from critics, librarians, book sellers and prominent young-adult novelists," says The Times's Alexandra Alter. After more than a year, The Hate U Give remains affixed to The Times's bestseller list and is being formatted for a major motion picture starring The Hunger Games's Amandla Stenberg. Last week's session offered another healthy heap of anti-blackness. Starr's father Maverick, allegedly Thomas's favorited character, finally became aware that his daughter is in an "interracial relationship" with a White boy. Minutes after meeting Starr's father for the first time, Chris begins holding hands with and kissing Starr. The White boy is awarded points for continuing to grip Starr's hand even when her father enters the room.
