Description
When was the last time a family member set you off? Family has this amazing ability to press our buttons like nothing else. They seem to know exactly what to say and how to say it to get behind our defenses, and find those tiny areas where they can trigger a huge emotional eruption. And they do is so effortlessly. It's enough to make you feel incredibly anxious, angry and defensive just thinking about it! For me, it feels like the older I've become the more family triggers I have. And when those triggers go unchecked, I can feel like I'm at the whim of my emotions and at the whim of my family members. Recently I was visiting family and experienced two separate situations which set off the emotional fireworks within me. It hit me quickly and left me frozen in my tracks. I explore those two situations in today's episode, sharing how I handled the situations in the moment, the awareness I gained after the fact, and the gratitude I have for the people involved. Only through awareness of our triggers can we begin to do something about them. And when our family press our buttons, we don't have to feel like victims on the defensive. We can actually feel gratitude, compassion and love.
