INTRODUCTION
I began attending morning sadhana in my early college years at the local 3HO i ashram. Every morning before dawn, we would gather in the sadhana room for meditation. Wrapped in my shawl, surrounded by the gentle hush of early morning, my life began to change. There was no grand revelation—just a quiet sense of arriving, as if a door had opened to a part of me I hadn’t yet met. In that shared experience, the noise of my mind grew faint, and I caught my first glimpse of the steady silence that lives beneath it all. This was the beginning of my journey into sadhana, a daily rhythm that would come to shape me from the inside out. A practice that would transform my life in ways I never imagined.
Sadhana, the commitment to a daily spiritual practice, is not tied to any religion or dogma. At its core, it is a holistic daily routine that weaves together the threads of spiritual disciplines, including prayer, pranayama (yogic breathing), yoga, and meditation. It is a path that invites us to connect with our inner selves, to find balance amidst the chaos, and to open our hearts to each moment.
This book serves as your guide to establishing and maintaining a personalized daily sadhana. Whether you’re a beginner taking your first steps or an experienced meditator looking to deepen your journey, this book is for you. Although I am a Sikh, sadhana is a practice that applies to all faiths. I hope to offer you a roadmap, a series of steps to guide you toward a successful daily sadhana.
Allow me to share a bit about myself. My name is Shanti Kaur, and I have been practicing meditation within the Sikh tradition for over 50 years. I had the privilege of studying directly under Yogi Bhajan for more than three decades. Today, I continue this path as a meditation teacher and writer.
As you journey through this book, you’ll find a structure designed to support you. We’ll explore setting up a dedicated meditation space, choosing the right time for practice, and selecting the length of time that suits your life. You’ll find guidance on overcoming common challenges like motivation, fatigue, and mental clutter. Detailed instructions on breathing techniques, yoga sets, and chanting await you in the appendix, based on Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan®.
There are many myths surrounding the practice of sadhana. Some believe it is too complex or restricted to certain spiritual traditions. In truth, sadhana is adaptable and accessible to everyone. It is a practice that welcomes you as you are, offering you tools to enrich your spiritual path, whatever that path may be. Inclusivity is at the heart of this book. There are tailored options for various religious traditions, ensuring that sadhana can complement and enrich any spiritual journey. The universal appeal of sadhana lies in its simplicity and its profound ability to transform our lives.
Maintaining a daily sadhana has many benefits. Scientifically and personally, it has been demonstrated to enhance mental well-being, promote spiritual growth, and develop self-mastery. As you integrate sadhana into your life, you may find yourself more centered, more connected, and more alive.
As you step onto this path, may you do so with a sense of commitment and wonder. The journey of sadhana holds the power to reshape your inner landscape in quiet, transformative ways. It is a doorway to a fuller, more awakened life. Welcome to sadhana! May it bring peace in your heart, strength in your spirit, and awareness in every step.

LAYING THE FOUNDATION OF A DAILY SADHANA
Have you ever woken up in the stillness of dawn, feeling the world’s embrace before its daily rush? It is a moment where time seems to pause, offering a space of clarity and peace. This quiet hour presents a profound opportunity for transformation, treasured by all spiritual paths for its divine stillness and the promise of a clear mind. As the sun rises every day, so too can you, nurtured by a practice that integrates body, mind, and spirit. Over the years, sadhana has been my anchor, a daily practice that has grounded me and opened my heart to life’s possibilities. Through this chapter, I invite you to explore the roots of this transformative tradition, to gain a deeper understanding of its full breadth and depth.
UNDERSTANDING SADHANA – BEYOND MEDITATION
The etymology of the word sadhana is found in classical Sanskrit and is deeply rooted in Asia’s spiritual and philosophical traditions. The root word, "sadh, means
to accomplish in Sanskrit, and in the Sikh tradition, it refers to being
spiritually accomplished." Sadhana describes personal effort that is intentional, dedicated, and sustained towards one’s spiritual elevation. While the word originates in India, sadhana can be applied to all spiritual traditions. One who has a consistent sadhana practice is known, with great respect, as a sadhak.
Sadhana is a tapestry of daily routine that weaves through your lifestyle, whether you’re just beginning or have been meditating for years. At its heart, sadhana is about sustained spiritual growth through consistent practice. It is not limited to any particular faith but harmonizes with all spiritual orientations. This openness is what makes sadhana a universal practice of discipline and commitment. Engaging with sadhana means embracing a holistic approach that honors your entire being.
The multifaceted nature of sadhana encompasses physical, mental, and spiritual dimensions. Physical practices like yoga and pranayama help prepare your body, creating a
