About this ebook

When you think of motherhood, you dream of your child's first steps and the first day of kindergarten, high school, and college. For me, I wanted to dress my three sons alike and watch them play sports together, and I wanted them to have a strong brotherhood. What I never saw coming was constant doctor visits, surgery, my poor child being put to sleep, the whispers, and the stares. Those damn stares from total strangers were the worst. This book is about to take you on a hell of a ride: my son's battle with autism and my denial, sadness, anger, and, finally, acceptance. My fear of the unknown--that is, raising a child with autism--and watching it all come together through a mother's eyes.

First and foremost, I want to thank God . Without Him, all this would not be possible.

I want to thank my beautiful sister, who inspired me to finish my book. Thank you for believing in my vision.

I want to thank a very special angel, Diana Carrier, who reminded me to follow my dreams. Continue to rest in peace.

My love, Anthony Short Jr., thank you for never leaving D'Anthony's side. You are a great example of what a father should be.

A huge thank-you to my support team; none of this would've been possible without you.

I want to thank my mother for making me fall in love with books and my brother Jerry Washington for helping with my cover page and being super supportive.

    D'Anthony's Birth

D'Anthony Shawndell Short, affectionately known as King Dee, was born on September 4, 1996. He weighed five pounds and zero ounces. His low birth weight was due to many complications I faced, and I gave birth two months early. I became very sick, and they induced labor early. He was baby number three. I had two pretty normal pregnancies with my oldest two sons, but with D'Anthony, I had a very difficult pregnancy. I developed something called preeclampsia that eventually turned into eclampsia. Preeclampsia is caused by high blood pressure and is very dangerous. Shortly after, I developed eclampsia, a condition caused by preeclampsia and protein in the urine. I was put on seizure medicine. The doctors called in specialists because my blood pressure was
