I could feel the grass shrivel under my naked toes, the wind blowing at my curly hair, and the flowers matching my white dress. A bouquet was what I wanted. To sit between my love and me, to hear his laugh, and to watch the tilt of his head as his eyes crinkled with stress lines.

I looked over at him, tenderly watching as he placed the items on the blanket. The aesthetically old-themed radio plays "La vie En Rose," a classic French song translated into an English cover.

    He was so perfect.

His linen shirt was unbuttoned at the top but ironed to the crisp, lightly lying on top of his khakis. His toes were exposed…

Capri? Truett nudged me gently, and I blinked a few times, glancing around the room.

These weekly get-togethers were starting to be a burden, but anything to spend extra time with my boyfriend. I gaze up at my prize—the pro-bound, defensive end, Truett Young. He was an African American 6’3" stud and was all mine. We had been going together for over a year and would surely make it to the altar.

Ivy sat on the opposite side of us, next to a mutual friend we call Red and her boyfriend. Janine and Buster were siblings—they were somewhere in the kitchen.

What did I miss? I finally say, and the room chuckles. I hide a smile in my cup as I tilt the liquid into my mouth.

Truett throws a hand over my shoulder and leans towards my ear. Where'd you go?

I shake my head, reassuring him with a smile, and he reluctantly gives one back.

Hey, Truett, can you help me grab the pizza rolls? Ivy asks with a sweet little grin.

Truett turns to me, and I nod, Sure, go.

I watch the two disappear into the kitchen and take a deep breath. Nothing is more calming than a best friend who has a friendship bond with your boyfriend. It makes hanging out with him when she’s around a lot less awkward.

Ivy's boyfriend, Xavier, barely comes around unless he picks her up for a date or drops off food. Come to think of it, I've never seen him hang out here, and frankly, I don't know much about him. All I know is that he's extraordinarily wealthy and kind of a twat.

Ivy and Truett return from the kitchen, finally placing the pizza rolls in front of all the hungry faces. I try not to scratch my nose in disgust as everyone uses their unwashed fingers to eat from the same
