    UNDERSTANDING

    THE CHAKRAS

    WHAT ARE THE CHAKRAS?

Chakras are energy centres intricately woven into the fabric of the human body. They hold the power to influence specific organs, glands and systems, while simultaneously regulating various aspects of our lives. The roots of chakra exploration can be traced back to the diverse tapestry of Indian religions, where their significance is notably chronicled. Buddhist texts consistently allude to the presence of five chakras, whereas Hindu sources suggest the existence of six or seven of these energetic hubs.

Ancient Sanskrit texts, as rich and varied as the cultures that revered them, depicted chakras in two distinct ways. They were perceived as both meditative visualisations, where intricate flowers and powerful mantras played a central role, and as tangible energy points nestled within the human body. As the sands of time flowed, intricate practices emerged to foster a deeper connection with these vital centres. Breathing exercises, visualisations, mantras, specific postures and symbols were meticulously crafted to correspond with each chakra. These practices allowed individuals to access, influence, and ultimately balance these essential life forces.

The journey of chakra knowledge transcended the borders of India in the late 19th century, embarking on a global odyssey. It was during this period that several significant publications began to surface, notably Sir John Woodroffe’s groundbreaking work, The Serpent Power, published in 1919, as well as Charles W. Leadbeater’s 1927 book, aptly titled The Chakras, which also left an indelible mark on Western understanding. As time passed, these sacred energy centres found resonance and harmony with various other systems, including alchemy, astrology, crystals, homeopathy, Kabbalah, Tarot and Human Design. This convergence of wisdom enriched the exploration of chakras, infusing them with a holistic and far-reaching significance.

    Balancing the Chakras

If you have heard about chakras, you may have heard they can be opened or closed. And, although they can be represented by beautiful, coloured flowers, the terms of being opened or closed can be a little misleading.

Think about energy for a moment, particularly your own energy. When you woke up this morning, would you have described your energy as open or closed? Or would you have been more likely to describe it as high or low. Throughout the day, and on different days, your energy will peak and wane. The chakras are the same. Sometimes they possess too much energy and sometimes they are low in energy. The ideal is to bring them all into balance, where their energy is not too high or not too low, but just right.

There are many factors that will impact on the balance of your chakras including your physical health, emotional or mental state and your environment, from immediate to world or astrological events. Sometimes a chakra can shift in energy immediately. For example, the solar plexus chakra, which governs personal power may drop in energy in a sudden moment of you getting a big fright. However, sometimes it can take a lot of focus and devotion to rebalance a chakra that has become severely under or overactive due to traumatic experiences in your past. Chakras can also see-saw between the two extremes. For example, let’s say you are employed at a workplace where your opinion is not respected or honoured. Your throat chakra, which governs self-expression may become underactive. However, when you get home, into a more supportive environment, you may start dominating conversations as your throat chakra swings to an overactive state in an attempt to return to balance.

Another way of looking at each chakra is on a scale of one to 100. A chakra at one signifies severe underactivity, while a chakra at 100 indicates an overactive state. The ideal balance for each chakra lies at 50, yet achieving and sustaining this equilibrium isn’t a simple feat. Our lives are a constant flux of change, brimming with surprises, interactions and challenges. If your chakras find themselves in an unbalanced state, there’s no need for undue concern. Instead, consider it a valuable focal point for your personal development journey.

By directing your attention towards the chakras in need of balance, you embark on a profound path of self-discovery. This process illuminates the essence of who you are, sheds light on your reactions to life’s diverse scenarios, and unveils the road to personal evolution. Nurturing these unbalanced chakras not only brings you a greater sense of peace but also paves the way for enhanced equilibrium as you journey forward in life.

How do you know whether each chakra is balanced? In this book you will find a description of attributes that tend to be shown by an individual who either has an overactive, underactive or balanced chakra. As you become more familiar with each chakra, you may gain the ability to recognise the state of your own chakras as well as others. There are also tools such as kinesiology muscle testing or special photographic techniques that can be used. However, a simple way to test them yourself is using a pendulum.

Hold your pendulum in the hand you write with. and in your mind, or saying out loud, ask the question, Show me the energy of a balanced chakra. You may need to repeat the question a few times but as you begin to relax, you should start to see the pendulum swinging. Do not be concerned with the direction it is swinging, simply note how much movement there is. This will give you an indication of where each chakra should be, or a fifty on your scale of 1-100.

Next, place your other hand (the one you do not write with) over the chakra you wish to test. Then ask the question, Show me the energy of this chakra. If it swings more, this chakra is overactive, if it swings less, this energy centre is under active and if it moves the same amount, this indicates your chakra is balanced. Continue to test each of your chakras, comparing the pendulum’s swing to the movement of the first question you asked.

    Essential Oils and the Chakras

Essential oils are potent aromatic compounds gifted to us from various plants and trees around the world. On a physical level, the chemistry of an essential oil dances with our own biochemistry to support the body in regaining its natural state of balance. On a vibrational level, each essential oil can be used to positively impact a chakra. Each essential oil corresponds to and affects certain chakras in different ways. Some soothe while others stimulate. This can be based on a variety of factors from the colour of the plant’s fruit or flowers through to the chemistry constituents that make up the essential oil and which systems of the body it impacts.

This book will guide you through a wide array of essential oils for supporting the chakras. As each individual essential oil has its own unique profile and thus, particular effect on the chakras, there may be more than one you are called to use for your chakra work.

When working with essential oils, it’s important to keep a few key considerations in mind:

    1) Only use true essential oils – Around the world, there is a lack of regulation on the correct labelling of essential oils. It is estimated that two-thirds of essential oils on the market are not purely from the plant kingdom but have been created or adulterated in laboratories. These fake essential oils are dangerous and can cause issues not only with physical health but are also not going to have the desired effect on your chakras vibrationally. Make sure you obtain your essential oils from a company that has their oils tested by a third party and shows transparency in the sourcing of their plant material.

    2) Use essential oils safely – There are four main ways essential oils can be used; aromatically through inhaling them, topically through applying them to the skin, internally by ingesting them with food or beverages, or around the home in ways such as cleaning. However, not all essential oils can be used in all four ways safely. Due to varying qualities of essential oils available, you cannot always assume that, for example, if one Lemon essential oil is safe to ingest, then all Lemon essential oils can be used that way. Always look to the company where you purchase your essential oils for guidance on how you should use their products safely. The good news is, although in this book you will find recommended ways to use each essential oil specific to each chakra, as long as you get the essential oil in you, on you or around you, it will have an energetic impact on the chakras.

    3) Sometimes essential oils are not available – I have been working with essential oils for over 25 years and in that time have built up a collection and many experiences with a wide array of essential oils. Some essential oils are extremely popular and are always readily available. However, Mother Nature is a finite being and at times, due to weather, bad ecological management, sustainability, weather patterns, climate change or logistics, some essential oils are not available all of the time. The intention of this book is to give you the confidence to use every essential oil you have in your collection, rather than feel you must keep expanding your collection to the point where you have essential oils sitting around and not being used. Remember they are offerings to you from the plant world, honour and use these gifts.

Determining which essential oil corresponds with each chakra is a subjective matter, and you may find variations from author to author, teacher to teacher and healer to healer. Sometimes, the connection between a particular essential oil and a specific chakra is apparent. For example, citrus oils, with their fruit colour, strongly align with chakras of the same colour. Floral essential oils may also indicate their best alignment through the colour of their flowers. However, not all essential oils come from fruits or flowers with vibrant colours.

As you familiarise yourself with each essential oil, you will discover that its personality guides you toward one of the main energy centres. In this book, you will find a guide featuring a comprehensive range of essential oils and their corresponding chakras. Typically, an oil aligns harmoniously with a single chakra; however, on rare occasions, it may also have a positive effect on a second chakra, often an adjacent energy centre. Remember that this list should not be considered absolute or definitive. Instead, it serves as a foundational suggestion to begin your own journey of exploring the relationship between each essential oil and the chakra it aligns with—for yourself, the people you live with, and even your clients if you are a healer.

You will also find an extensive list of both common and rare essential oils for each chakra. Just as each essential oil possesses different constituents, aroma, impact and vibration, they will each impact a chakra in different ways. Some will stimulate and empower an underactive chakra, whereas others will soften the energy of a chakra when it is overactive. Other essential oils will amplify a particular effect of a chakra. Choose to work with the essential oils you are drawn to. To support you in finding the right essential oils for you at any given time, there is an activity in each chapter that allows you to complete a quiz, then turn over the page and discover the oils which best suit your needs following a moment of self-reflection. You can choose to use these essential oils singularly or create a blend. Tips for the best ways to use the blends are offered in each chapter.

Over time as you grow, your needs for each chakra will change, therefore allow yourself to continually repeat the process of creating chakra blends using different oils as appropriate.

    Essential Oils and Crystals

Essential oils are not the only way to bring your chakras back to a balanced state. Crystals are another great tool. With crystals, knowing which crystals are best for each chakra is easy! The colour of the crystal directly connects it to the chakra of the same colour. Combining essential oils and crystals creates a potent energy source greater than their individual components. To illustrate, when setting a romantic mood, you wouldn’t rely solely on a red candle. Instead, you’d dim the lights, use romantic scents like Vanilla and Ylang Ylang, place love crystals around, play sensual music, and prepare a loving meal. This combination aligns with your intention. By pairing your chakra essential oils and blends with crystals, you will experience enhanced results in balancing your chakras.

There are various ways to combine essential oils and crystals:

    1. Dressing in Oils & Crystals: Apply an essential oil mixed with a carrier oil to your body and place a crystal on you, like jewellery or in your pocket, aligning with your intention.

    2. Crystal Rollerballs: Some suppliers offer essential oil rollerballs with crystals, or you can add small crystal chips to a rollerball for a constant infusion of crystal energy.

    3. Crystal Cauldrons: Enhance your essential oil diffuser by adding tumbled crystals or quartz points. Place natural or raw crystals around the diffuser to amplify the energy (rather than placing them in the water as raw crystals can dissolve or be damaged if they become wet.).

    4. Medicine or Charm Bags: Create a bag with crystals, essential oil-soaked cloth, intention notes, and corresponding items. Wear, carry or place these bags somewhere special to you to manifest your desires.

You will find several suggested essential oil and crystal pairings in the following chapters.

    Chakra Affirmations

While working with your chosen essential oils and possibly including crystals, consider exploring affirmations. Affirmations serve as powerful tools for chakra balancing by allowing individuals to focus their intention and energy on specific energy centres, promoting harmony and alignment within the body. Through consistent use, affirmations can help clear blockages, enhance energy flow, and foster overall well-being in both the physical and spiritual realms. Use affirmations daily as you engage your chakra essential oils and crystals.

You will find many books and websites offering suggestions for affirmations for chakras, or you may prefer to personally write your own. The example affirmations within this book each start with an empowering statement associated with the energy centre. For example, using I am statements means that you are purely operating out of the base chakra. Consider using the following statements to manifest balance in each separate energy centre. To empower each chakra’s affirmations, start them with:

    Base – I am

    Sacral – I feel

    Solar Plexus – I do

    Heart – I love

    Throat – I speak

    Third Eye – I see/know

    Crown – I know

Once you have found an affirmation or set one that resonates with your current situation, repeat the affirmation regularly, believing in its truth and visualise the desired outcome while using the appropriate essential oils. Infuse the affirmation with genuine emotion and stay consistent with your practice. Be mindful of any resistance or negative thoughts that may arise, acknowledging them and refocusing on the affirmation. Conclude each session with a sense of gratitude. While affirmations are powerful, they work best when accompanied by actions that align with your intention. Patience and persistence are key, as results may vary from person to person and may take time to become evident.

    Complementary Activities

At the end of each chapter, you will find a selection of supplementary activities that play a crucial role in nurturing the equilibrium of a specific chakra. These activities offer a flexible range of options that can seamlessly integrate into your daily routine, like simple practises you can weave into your day. Others may influence your lifestyle choices, such as the type of music you listen to or the foods you consume, aligning them with the energy needs of the chakra you are working on. Additionally, certain activities are ideally suited for moments when you can allocate dedicated time to focus on the chakra, providing you with a more comprehensive and immersive experience. This multifaceted approach allows for a holistic and personalised journey towards chakra balancing with essential oils and overall well-being.

    Part 2

    THE SEVEN MAIN

    CHAKRAS

While the human energy system comprises of a full range of chakras throughout and around the body, the most widely acknowledged are the seven primary chakras. These vital energy centres are located along the spinal column and are symbolically associated with the seven colours of the rainbow, namely red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. For those who are new to the concept of chakras, it is strongly advised to begin by exploring these foundational seven chakras, as they serve as an excellent entry point. In the forthcoming pages, you’ll embark on a journey, delving into comprehensive descriptions of each of these seven chakras. These descriptions encompass their unique colours, precise positions in the body, correspondences with various aspects of life, and the profound impact they exert when in a state of balance or imbalance. Moreover, you’ll find invaluable guidance on how to foster the evolution of each chakra, enabling you to harmonise and optimise the specific life facets that they govern.

    THE BASE CHAKRA

    wa.jpeg

The base chakra, also known as the root chakra, is found at the base of the spine. It aligns with specific anatomical points, including the perineum and the initial three vertebrae, converging at the pelvic plexus. Symbolically, this energy hub is associated with the colour red. Just as a sturdy house relies on a robust foundation for stability, the soul also thrives when its base chakra is in equilibrium, anchoring it firmly to the earthly realm.

Among the seven primary chakras, the base chakra stands out as the centre of our physicality and our connection to the tangible world. It represents the most instinctive, primal and animalistic aspects within our chakra system. It governs our sense of safety and ability to provide the basic needs such as food, shelter and healthcare for ourselves and family. The nervous system and the adrenal glands are connected to our base chakra, so the
