Great Wall of China - Dr. History

    Chapter One: The Great Wall

The section of the Great Wall in Jinshanling. A portion of the Great Wall of China called Jinshanling is situated in the mountainous region of Luanping County, Chengde, Hebei Province.

Ancient China gave rise to a vibrant culture that is still present in contemporary China. One of the longest-reigning empires has been battled over by Chinese emperors for many years. Generations of invention and cultural growth accompanied the emergence and demise of many imperial houses. One of the most remarkable structures ever built was the Great Wall, a gigantic fortress constructed in ancient China. The Great Wall is, in fact, made up of several barriers, many of which run parallel to one another, that were constructed for around 2000 years throughout northern China and southern Mongolia.

Shanhaiguan, in the Hebei province, is where the Great Wall starts, and Jiayuguan, in the Gansu province, is where it ends. The Great Wall has an overall length of more than 20,000 kilometers. It was continually constructed on the northern frontier of the nation from the third century B.C. to the seventeenth century A.D. as the significant military protection project of succeeding Chinese Empires. The Chinese rulers constructed it to defend their land.

For thousands of years, Chinese authorities launched wall-building initiatives to defend the country from northern, migratory intruders. It is a historically significant military border defense structure. In the past, it separated the highly civilized China of farmland and cities from the fierce, barbaric tribes of the north, whose repeated invasions threatened to divide China. However, the wall had a variety of other functions. It established boundaries between areas of interest, defined a border, and contained rebellious populations so they could be managed, fined, and made into enslaved people.

The Great Wall and typical city walls have height as a standard feature. The two, however, were very dissimilar in terms of form. The Great Wall was an unbroken, lengthy wall that stretched for thousands of miles without ever coming together at either end. However, other researchers disagreed with the notion that the fence is continuous. Further, it is not just a wall but walls instead, in plural. They exist in fragments that, on clear maps, resemble the DNA strands in a scientific illustration. According to one scholar, even though rivers and valleys occasionally cut off the great wall, the wall’s overall structure is unaffected. Since ancient times, rivers, roads, and other features have constantly disrupted military security systems. However, this has no impact on its comprehensive protective
