    Chapter One: Milyon Gibson

Iwas sitting in the court room holding my breath. My ex-boyfriend Willie was waiting for his fate to be handed to him as the prosecution stated their case. He’d been arrested two months ago for felony possession of a controlled substance, felony distribution of a controlled substance, and possession of a firearm, the worst possible charges a nigga could face besides murder. Willie wasn’t the smartest when it came to making good decisions. That’s why the choices he made for himself always came back to haunt him, adding me to the receiving end of whatever fate came his way, but not this time.

Willie had a full-ride scholarship to college on a football scholarship but got kicked out his sophomore year for selling drugs in the dormitory. Not to mention, his room always smelled of weed. They couldn’t wait to get his ass off the campus. They even told his mama that they’d ship his shit back home on the house. Talking about stupid beyond belief. How do you throw away a chance to make it out of the hood? That nigga had the talent to make it far in life. Even his grades weren’t that good. Willie probably would’ve gone pro if he hadn’t fucked up, but being a fuck up seemed to be Willie’s way of life, and I wish I’d never taken his ass seriously four years ago. I met Willie Hughes one day while walking down the drink aisle of Mason’s Grocery Store, where I worked. He was fine as hell and had all the girls around the neighborhood wanting to get with him. He was six foot three with caramel brown skin, full lips, a broad nose, and hazel eyes. He had locs that hung down to the middle of his back that were always kept in braids or in a ponytail. His massive body was intimidating. This was why he was a lineman when he played football. I knew Willie from high school but didn’t pay much attention to him. I was a year older than him, so we barely saw each other in high school. I wasn’t a part of the popular crowd, nor was I trying to be. I hung out with my best friend Skye, who was here at court with me today. She never liked Willie from the start. She said he was a clown ass nigga faking like he got game. She ripped and ran the streets more than I did, so she knew there was something about him. Skye hated his possessiveness. She felt that Willie’s jealous insecurities were a result of him not being shit. I told Skye she was crazy. Willie just really cared a lot about me and didn’t want anyone to hurt me. In response, she called me stupid and delusional. Still, I overlooked her complaints ‘cus he treated me nicely. I guess hindsight is twenty, twenty. I should’ve listened to my best friend.

I can’t say it’s been all bad. I mean, we lived a pretty decent life. I worked at a grocery store in the bakery department, and Willie sold drugs on the block. He was in charge of a dope house for a big-time nigga from our hood named Puc. Puc had given Willie some money to help with school expenses. However, Willie got kicked out, so Puc gave him a position after he came home from college. Puc knew about Willie’s home situation, so he would definitely need some money.

I ran into Willie at a club owned by Puc and his cousin Ralph. One night, I was out with friends. He was insistent that I give him my phone number. Willie even sent bottles over to our table. I wasn’t too sure if I wanted to talk to Willie. His game was a bit whack, but he was cute. Besides, I was in culinary school, working towards my degree. I didn’t need no distractions, and a nigga like Willie seemed like the type who would occupy all of it. I was focused and driven when it came to my goals. My parents raised me to be an over achiever, plus I wanted to make them proud. I wanted to open my own bakery in the hood after I graduated. Willie acted like he was interested in my dreams, too. I guess that was how he managed to sway me to fuck with him, ‘cus after six months of dating, Willie moved me out of my parents’ house into a nice two-bedroom condo apartment across town. I was happy to be out of my parents’ home, so they couldn’t keep tabs on what I was doing. I was grown, but my daddy kept a tight watch on me. According to him, I had to uphold his reputation since he was the committeemen of our neighborhood. It was a part of the local government that helped to manage the communities throughout the city. My father had been in office for the last six years. The people from our neighborhood loved my father just as much as they loved my grandfather. That made life much more difficult for me. I had turned down so many men that tried to get on me. I knew my daddy would never approve of me dating any of them.  All the big-time players from the city knew my name ‘cus of my family. Those were the ones I definitely knew to stay away from. Willie didn’t act like none of them, so it was no wonder I fell prey to the first street nigga that I let take me out on a date. I got caught up on all the money he was throwing around, even though I didn’t want for nothing. My parents spoiled me dearly, giving me whatever I wanted. I was acting like a bitch that ain’t never had someone give her something. I guess all money ain’t good money. Willie promised to help me get my shop. That was like music to my ears since it appeared Willie wasn’t hurting for cash. He also promised to never do anything to hurt me. That all came crashing down sooner than later. Sometimes, I wondered if my grandfather would’ve liked Willie or if he would’ve run his simple ass away.

My grandfather Ernest Gibson made a name for himself in the streets back in the day for being a long shark and businessman. He owned and operated a soda shop in our neighborhood, along with a lounge that was located in the back of it. Everyone knew me as Big Gib’s granddaughter. That was probably why Willie got a strong reaction when everyone first found out we were together. Willie gave the appearance that he was getting money when he was trying to get with me. Yet, once we lived together, the cash flow seemed to slow down. It wasn’t until the little street cred I had gave Willie a better position with Puc. Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t that interested in the street life, yet I loved the attention that I got when I went out on occasion with Willie.

Looking back, things were good between me and Willie for the first eight months. He would spoil me with designer clothes, shoes, and purses. We ate at the most expensive restaurants and vacationed throughout the country. Willie had a bit of a gambling habit, so we went to Vegas a lot. The hotels would comp us rooms ‘cus they knew Willie was going to go for broke. That was how he got his reputation around the city, too. There wasn’t a dice game the nigga Willie wouldn’t walk away from. Sometimes, things would go in Willie’s favor, where he would win big. But there were more times that things went bad, and my household suffered for it.

I hope the judge throws the book at that no good ass nigga, Skye complained. I can’t believe you stayed with him after having a baby on you.

Let it go Skye, I have, I replied, running my fingers through my Brazilian weave. God is giving me my out, and I’m going to take it.

God been given you an out. You just decided to ignore it. Skye rolled her eyes at me, smacking her lips. She has a hard time forgiving people ever since her dad left her mother for another woman. She always hated men who cheated. It was kind of ironic, though, since Skye tended to fuck with married men or men who had girlfriends. I guess that was my friend’s toxic trait for not dealing with her daddy issues. I’m not one to judge her, though. I love my best friend. She was definitely my ride-or-die.

I’m just making sure best friend. You can do some stupid shit sometimes when it comes to that nigga. If you forgave him for having a baby on you, then going to jail is light weight comparatively. Skye smacked her lips as she rolled her eyes. Is that Ralph’s fine ass making his way over here?

I looked over to the right of me to see what she was talking about when Ralph Simmons came over to where we were sitting. Ralph was known around the city for being one of the biggest dope men in the city. He and his cousin Eddy Simmons, Puc as we called him, had businesses all around the city. Ralph was known for moving weight, and his appearance was a walking billboard for it. He was always dressed down in designer clothing and flashy jewelry, and today was no different.

Hey, Milyon, what’s up? Ralph asked, sitting down next to me.

Hey Ralph, how’s it going? I replied, sliding over.

Hi Ralph, Skye said, leaning over me. You looking good today.

So are you, baby. Ralph winked at Skye, making her giggle. I rolled my eyes, elbowing her so she would get off of me. My friend was crazy about any man who had a lot of money. Every time she saw one, it was like a basketball fan seeing LeBron James. She’d get all goo-goo-eyed and start doing stupid shit like tugging on me.

How long have the jury been out deliberating? Ralph questioned, checking his phone.

They’ve been out since yesterday. The defense rested their case, and the jury has been out deliberating ever since. Willie called last night, begging me to come for the verdict. I planned on doing it anyway. I had to know what was going to happen.

You gon’ do the bit with him? Ralph smiled, showing his gold and diamond grill.

Hell no! I jerked my head back, frowning. I’m done with that nigga. One of his baby mamas can take on that slack, sitting over there with his mama looking stupid and sour in the face.

I hated his mama just as much as I hated them bitches he had kids by. Lori was a special type of something. The bitch had the nerve to come to my house talking about how she needed to get whatever money and jewelry Willie had there at the house. I looked at her like she had six heads. I told her since she didn’t have any money to help his lawyer, whatever cash he had was going towards that. Willie was pressing me about getting a lawyer, knowing I didn’t have the money for one. The money I had went towards the bills since I still had to live. I had to make sure I was okay first ‘cus I wasn’t about to be homeless. I sold his jewelry and the last of the drugs he had stashed at the house to cover his legal expenses. Willie wanted one of the best defense attorneys in the city. It cost big bucks for a lawyer like that, and Ralph was nice enough to recommend someone. Since Willie worked for Puc and Ralph, they looked out for him and sent me to a lawyer. They also paid off the remaining balance that Willie owed. Puc even sent over a week’s worth of groceries to help a sister out when Willie first got arrested.

I noticed Willie kept looking back at me. He should’ve been paying attention to the little bitch that came to me as a woman on the first day of trial, talking about how she was pregnant by Willie. She didn’t look no older than sixteen. However, she swore she was nineteen. Her over developed ass was wet behind the ears. I could tell she wasn’t nineteen by the way she carried herself. Niggas don’t even have morals anymore. They’ll fuck anything with a pussy as long as it looks good.

I looked over to see Willie being brought in by the sheriff. Even though he hadn’t had a haircut and was in an orange jumpsuit. Willie still looked good with his nothing ass. I let him charm the fuck out of me one too many times with those gorgeous eyes. He was the reason why I put my dreams on the back burner to live the street life like so many others in my neighborhood. I got me a dope boy living the life of a hustler’s woman, and that shit didn’t get me anywhere.

All rise! The bailiff called out. We all stood as the judge came back into the courtroom. Willie was still staring at me, blowing kisses. I rolled my eyes, turning my nose up at him. He can save all those sour kisses for the dumb bitches that wanted him ‘cus I sure as hell didn’t. I haven’t wanted Willie since he told me he had a one-year-old daughter that he kept hidden. His baby mama, Trish, lived clear across town, so the likely hood of us crossing paths was slim to none. His oldest daughter’s mother went to school with us. They were high school sweethearts that became parents on prom night. I was two years older than Willie, so I graduated before them. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the two of them were a couple. My stupid ass believed him when he said he was only with her for their daughter. Considering he had his own apartment, I didn’t think nothing of it. You know what they say about baby mamas and their baby daddy’s. It doesn’t matter if they’re together or not. There will always be a revolving door for them, and the pussy will always be available, not unless they hated each other.

You may be seated, Judge Thomas said, settling in his chair. Jurors. Have you all reached a verdict?

Yes, we have, the foreman said, standing. In the case of Willie Hughes. We find the defendant guilty of all charges.

Yeah! Skye yelled out, clapping obnoxiously.

I looked at her crazily while some of the other people in the courtroom laughed. The judge banged his gavel, trying to calm everyone down. Willie’s baby mama, China, screamed bloody murder while the other one, Trish, ran out of the courtroom. His mother stood in outrage, then fainted to the floor. The judge ordered one of the sheriffs to go over to check on her while Willie’s homeboys shouted profanities. The courtroom had turned into a zoo with all of Willie’s supporters going ham.

I dropped my head into my hands, thanking God for his favor. I knew with all of the evidence they had against Willie. He would be going to prison, but for some reason, he thought his lawyer would be able to get him off. I told his dumb ass that it didn’t matter how much money he shelled out to the lawyer. It wasn’t a guarantee that he would get off.

Are you okay, Milyon? Ralph asked, rubbing my back. I know this isn’t the verdict you wanted to hear. I rose with a big smile on my face.

I’m good, Ralph. This is exactly the verdict I wanted to hear, I replied.

Friend, you’re free! Skye mused. Your chains have been released from that fuck boy!

I feel liberated! I called out. There was so much chaos going on in the courtroom that Judge Thomas started banging his gavel erratically.

Order in my court room! he shouted. Settle down now! I’m about to start locking more than Mr. Hughes up for contempt of court. Settle down people!

It seemed everyone was ignoring him by the way they kept going on. I looked over at Willie, who had his head down on the table covering his head. I knew this wasn’t what he wanted to hear. However, I felt it was for the best. He got too comfortable for his own good and allowed his arrogance to get him jammed up.

Aye, Milyon, tell Willie if he needs anything, I got him, Ralph said, standing.

I think you should tell his mama, Ralph. I rolled my eyes. Me and Willie ain’t together. The only reason why I’m here is because he asked me to come. I’d cut that nigga loose shortly after he went to jail. I looked out for him by paying the lawyer, but it was his money, and that was the extent of it. I let that nigga fuck up my life for years. Now I’m a free bird.

Ralph chuckled, looking over at Willie. It seemed his attention was focused on us. And the look on Willie’s face was one of confusion and hurt. I’d already told him that I wasn’t going to do this bit with him. I’ve wasted enough time already. I’d been through too much with Willie to stay.

Understood. Well, I hope you get everything you deserve, and for the record, me and Puc thought you should’ve never been fucking with Willie in the first place. You come from a good family, and that nigga didn’t deserve you.

Hindsight is twenty-twenty, and I’ve learned my lesson. I’m about to get myself together and get back on track. I’m done fucking with street niggas.

    Chapter Two: Milyon

There was so much for me to process leaving the courthouse. I was finally free of Willie’s controlling, jealous ass. I could make my own decisions for my life without him throwing a monkey wrench in my plans. I was about to do something with my life and swear off street niggas. They don’t mean you no good. They’ll gas you up with lavish gifts, lies, and good dick, only to disappoint you in the end. People thought we were doing it since Willie had a truck sitting on some twenty-four-inch rims and a system that sounded like a club inside of it. I drove his raggedy-ass Mercedes that had more problems than a little bit. The check engine light stayed on due to Willie not getting the regular maintenance required to keep it in good condition. I guess I can’t complain since The paint job still looked good, and it got me around the city.

I strolled down the steps and headed towards the sidewalk. Skye went to get her car while I spoke to a few people. I didn’t want to act like a total bitch towards Willie’s family. He had some cousins
