Bermuda Triangle Mystery - Dr. History
Chapter One: The Bermuda Triangle
The Bermuda Triangle: The Bermuda Triangle is a place of strange happenings. Dozens of airplanes and ships have disappeared there for completely unexplained reasons. There have been ships disappearing without trace or distress signal, even in fair weather. A squadron of US navy bombers disappeared without a trace.
The region called Bermuda or Devil’s Triangle encompasses approximately 500,000 square miles of sea off the southeast tip of Florida. When the great explorer Christopher Columbus traveled through the region on his first great expedition to the Americas, which he called the New World, he noted that an enormous fiery flame (possibly a meteor) smashed into the ocean one evening and that an odd glow occurred in the distance some weeks later. He furthermore put down that there were unpredictable readings from his ship’s compass. This is possible because, at that time, a fraction of the Bermuda Triangle was one of the isolated places on the Globe where the true and magnetic north lined up.
The USS Cyclops
Another of the puzzles of the Bermuda Triangle and, consequently of World War I is the disappearance of the coal-carrying ship the USS Cyclops. Previous to World War I, the ship supported and supplied U.S. warships in the waters of Europe, just off the Atlantic coast. They also served in the Caribbean as a squadron of the Naval Auxiliary Force. Early in March 1918, while they were returning from a journey to Brazil somewhere between Barbados and Chesapeake Bay, the Cyclops vanished with all crew on board. Although she was fitted to do so, she never sent out an SOS call. Many boats sailed to find her as she was believed to have been destroyed by a German submarine. The wreck of the 542-foot-long ship with more than 300 men and 10,000 tons of ore onboard plunged somewhere into the Ocean. Many people credited her disappearance to the Bermuda Triangle, especially when, in 1941, two of her sister ships disappeared without a trace along a similar route.
Joshua Slocum: After gaining extensive prestige as the first individual to sail solo around the world, Joshua Slocum vanished, with his boat The Spray, without a trace on a voyage from Martha’s Vineyard to South America in 1909. Though it’s uncertain what occurred, many sources later credited his loss to the mysterious Bermuda Triangle. Speculation was rife as to the cause as he was a family man and a fine sailor. Possibly one of the violent and sudden storms in the Bermuda Triangle caused his demise. Or possibly it was something more
