    Early Antiwar Movements

    Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal. We must pursue peaceful ends through peaceful means.

    For thousands of years, wars have been fought between villages, kingdoms, and nations. We often read about wars or hear people talk about them. But is any armed conflict a war? No. To be a war, a conflict must be ongoing and claim more than 1,000 lives.2 Not everyone agrees that war is the answer to differences among people. Protesters have risked their reputation, their freedom, and their lives to speak out against war. In the end, though, peaceful protests have often prevented or ended wars. This book covers a few of these historic protests.
