    About The Author

I, Larry D. Murphy, graduated from Castlemont High School, Oakland CA in 1969. I joined the United States Marines, two months after graduation Semper Fi. I finished my military commitment in June 1973. I received an Honorable Discharge and all the benefits associated with military service.

I have been an attorney, Special Agent, business owner, real estate salesman, MLM participant, car salesman, electric substation operator, insurance salesman, and a US Marine. My journey has been anything but typical and I wouldn’t change a thing. Each obstacle and opportunity in my life has afforded me personal relationships, growth, knowledge and experiences that are irreplaceable.

I used the electronics training I received in the Marines to obtain a job with PG&E, after my discharge. My employment with PG&E afforded me the opportunity to purchase a home and live a bachelor’ life.

I made the decision to quit my job and pursue a college degree in pursuit of a career and better pay. I sold my house and resigned from PG&E in 1978. My father said People don’t quit a good job to go to school; they go to school to get a good job! My lady friend, who became my wife in 1978, went to CSUH and obtained a college application in support of my decision.

My wife worked full-time, while I attended college, and never hesitated to support my career aspirations. She has been my greatest supporter and motivator. I graduated in 1981 with a BS degree, Business Administration, Accounting Option. My goal was to become a CPA.

I was advised that working in the exam division of the IRS would give me invaluable tax experience and increase my marketability as a CPA. After working for the IRS Examination Division, and performing audits of CPA clients, I realized that I did not want to become a CPA.

While employed by the IRS I was encouraged to apply for the Special Agent position, which had significant opportunities for promotion and retirement at age 55. I was selected for the Special Agent position and completed the training in 1983. I held that position until retiring in 2005.

About a year before retiring, I expressed to my Wife that I wanted to go to law school. A few days later, she handed me a LSAT study guide and a list of law schools. I applied to New College of California and was accepted upon retirement. I graduated in 2008. I passed the California BAR in January 2021. I practiced Family Law and Probate Law.

Many people questioned why I continued to take the exam after not passing it the first, second, third …times. Each time I took the BAR exam I felt I had done my best, but knew I could do better. My answers were hand written, the first few times I took the exam. I doubted that I could type fast enough to complete the exam, because a portion of my right index finger was amputated. With my wife’s help and encouragement, I learned to type and passed the California BAR.

My wife and two sons (Christopher and Demetri) have always been my support team. However, I also had the support of a prayer team: Mother Stella Murphy, Mother Barbara McElhaney and members of Mingleton Temple COGIC. I had too many people believing and supporting me to give in to self-doubt, setbacks and disappointments.

I believe God has a plan for everyone and we each have a purpose according to his plan. Follow your heart and pursue your dreams without wavering. Find out what it is you want to do, or be. Then make a commitment to yourself and those you love to achieve your goal and pursue it relentlessly!

You won’t succeed if you don’t put in the work.!

Life coaching is a process which assists the client in defining and achieving their goals in various areas of their life. The coaching process will close the gap between your current state and your life goal. The life coach is tasked with asking appropriate questions and providing tools and techniques to empower the client. The tools and coaching are designed to enable the client to recognize their strengths, weaknesses and personal characteristics. The client and coach will create a strategic plan to achieve the clients’ stated goal.

The primary goal of the coach-client relationship is to help the client determine, with absolute certainty, the goal the client wants to achieve and then help the client develop a personalized plan to accomplish the goal. Life coaching is not therapy or counseling. It is not designed to treat mental health issues or emotional disorders!

Life coaching is a partnership between coach and client, where the coach supports the client to make progress toward the realization of their stated goals. It is a process that involves personal conversations between client and coach. The client will be asked questions that are intended to be thought provoking and reveal positive and negative personal characteristics. The intent is to help the client recognize personal strengths and weaknesses and develop a strategic plan to maximize the strengths and minimize the weaknesses. For example: if you have a tendency to procrastinate. There will be exercises to help you recognize and control the urge to procrastinate. The coaching process will reveal your perspective regarding your past and present life experiences, what inspires you, and what issues may be hindering your progress. Based upon your answers to the self-assessment questions you and your coach will develop the appropriate exercises and strategic plan to help you achieve your goal.

The road to success is paved with hard work and determination!
