    CHAPTER TWO

When Jamie got back from school, she asked whose place we were currently crashing in. This is sick! Jamie exclaimed. How come Aunt Liz never told me about this place. My sister said aw struck, Joel walked into the room at that moment and asked what Jamie's jaw was on the floor; I let her tell him what I’d just told her. I thought she lived in an apartment? She asked in Joel’s general direction, he agreed. I smiled my fake smile and got Solo to help me show them around. They both chose their own rooms and got settled.

I poured Solomon a glass of vodka with a splash of soda at his request, then poured myself a glass of orange juice and a shot when he wasn’t looking. Solo grabbed a bowl and poured Cheetos mixing them with cool ranch Doritos; we went to the living room and watched the news on CNN as we ate our snack. After the news Solo left, decaling my offer to stay for dinner.

At 7pm my phone rang. D we have a problem. Solo’s grave voice declared when I answered.

What is it? I asked worry pumping my bloodstream getting me to full alert when my brain registered that he wasn’t talking about the massacre.

Someone broke into my house. Solomon sounded worried but on the verge of anger.

How do you know? I questioned, partly hoping he was being paranoid.

"The place is completely trashed! he yelled, and I think whoever did this is trying to send me a message," he continued.

What do you mean by message?

Well for starters there is blood all over my walls. And in the living room it says... something I just can’t make out, and there is something on the walls in my room as well.

I’m on my way. I hung up before he could argue. I told Joel I was heading out, grabbed my motorcycle and was gone. I rode at 80 sometimes 90 almost 100km/h. I love shortcuts. I rode on the quiet side of the area, on roads hardly anyone knew, or had long forgotten about. There were hardly any street lights here, but I never cared much about that, I just kept my full lights on. I enjoyed the quiet, the wind rushing past me... I was finally able to breathe, for the first time since... There was no police questioning me, no one crowding me... But I didn’t have time to fully relax, Solo needed my help, and he’d mentioned blood.

Needless to say I was there in less than twenty minutes, in what should have been a forty five minute drive. When I arrived I could already tell something was wrong. And not only because the door was only hanging on the frame on one hinge, something just felt...off. And the fact that the streetlights glow did not reach Solo’s house all the way did nothing to help my bad feeling.

I slid inside not wanting to touch anything, or get my fingerprints on anything. The first thing I saw was blood, when Solomon said there was blood on every wall he wasn’t kidding. The chairs and tables were broken, and so were some of the china. I sent Solo a text saying, ‘I am inside’ so he wouldn’t jump me, he sent a text to tell me he was in his room. That meant he was in his office which was on the other side of the house from his actual bedroom. I went to him in absolute silence. When I reached the door I typed in the code letting the finger scanner identify me, the lock clicked and the door swung open. You got here quickly. He said not bothering to looking at me.

Please tell me you didn’t listen to me and you installed security cameras. I half questioned even though I knew the answer to that, or at least suspected it.

I guess you’re not always right, are you? Solo replied sarcastically with a sigh.

Hey, I did suggest you get thermal cameras didn’t I? I responded automatically defending myself.

Yeah and that’s the footage I’ve been studying ever since I called you. I walked up behind him and watched the footage from over his shoulder. The door automatically closed when I moved away from it.

Speaking of which, did you call the cops? I questioned in worry. If Solo had contacted the police then we didn’t have a lot of time to analyze the blood, check for fingerprints or carefully inspect the heat masses on the screen. When the cops know more, more people always seem to find out. And the more people that know, well that just ruins the element of surprise... plus it gives the guilty party an advantage. I’d rather have first hand information, which the cops seemed unwilling to share with me. I suspect because of my age.

Nope, you’re the only one I’ve contacted. He said not taking his eyes off the computer.

Aww, I feel special. I replied, still watching the images, while putting on gloves.

What is that? I questioned slipping on the second glove.

What’s what? Solo asked in confusion.

Right there, I responded pointing at the screen after he rewound the tape and played it in slow motion.

I don’t know, I haven't really looked around. Solo confessed.

Well, may I suggest you do that now; see if anything is missing then take samples of the blood on every wall? When I’m done here, I waved my hand in the direction of the computer, I’ll come and help you, but we must hurry. Jamie was extremely worried when I told Joel I was going out so late at night.

It’s almost seven, but I wouldn’t really say that is late.

That’s what I tried to tell her. I responded as I took the footage back to the beginning of the day. I got a notepad and a pen to take down notes of anything that caught my eye. Solo left the room and I set off to work in the silent office. The place reminded me of labs mad scientists owned, a very neat mad scientist. It had a few computers and laptops scattered around the room, some large devices here and there. But my favorite thing about the room was the tile floor and ceiling that threw the light around.  After watching the first five minutes I realized the sound had been muted. Why would Solomon turn off the sound?  I wondered in my head, maybe he is paranoid. When I finished I had some very interesting things to share with Solo.

Just when I was about to get up I got a message on my phone from him. It was some of the blood samples, I hooked my phone to the computer and it started to look for matches. I put two samples on the computer, I had to switch computers not willing to overload the machine then I went to the next one then the other. All four computers in the office were running two searches for two different samples from the walls. Then I moved on to the two laptops, after which I went out of the office, and helped Solomon collect the rest of the blood samples. We hooked up the rest of the samples to a machine specially designed to search and match blood types, -one of the larger
