    Deadly Waves - Alvina Worrell

    Chapter 1: Boarding The Serenity

THE LUXURY YACHT THE serenity created a majestic figure on the crystal waves as the first rays of golden sunshine broke through the eastern horizon, illuminating the blue swells in a glittering glow.

The vessel's sumptuous fittings consisted of the intricate railings of polished mahogany-ringed teak decks were so spotless that their reflected image in the rippling veneer could be seen. The fore and aft decks were covered with plush lounge furniture made of the finest silks and leathers, like an island oasis. Even the metalwork shone with brushed vibrancy, radiating workmanship, and old-world charms that screamed luxury without sacrifice.

The bridge wing sat above with royal grandeur, sterile and dominating. Calm reigned below as soft wavelets lapped serenely against the yacht's shining hull, its peaceful susurrus exuding a feeling of tranquillity and languid escape from life's vexations on shore. Everything was set for stress-free delights on the wide sea, where problems faded in the face of chilly saline breezes and the warming warmth of daybreak. This was a floating utopia, a tranquil microcosm where affluence protected its occupants from the ups and downs of life. For the time being, peace wielded her gleaming sceptre over the decks of The Serenity—but for how long? What wonders awaited the new day?

A tiny fleet of water taxis slid quietly from St. John Port as the morning light reached the dazzling horizon. Their plush cabins cradled The Serenity's privileged guests—wealthy folks anxious to sail on this newest leisure vacation.

The passengers slid from vehicle to teak-laden platform one by one, an air of excitement hardly held by good breeding. Sharp eyes glanced about, taking in every feature of the floating castle as joyful discussion and rippling laughter resonated over the seas. Old friends exchanged warm grins and clasped hands, exchanging greetings and plans for the voyage ahead in tones as smooth as cashmere by education and rank.

Despite the early hour, spirits were high as decorum was abandoned. Here was a coterie bound together not merely by riches and circumstance but also by ties of friendship formed over many luxury miles traversed together on these protected swells. For the time being, all worries and responsibilities were moored in the dimming lights of St. John as this chosen group embarked on their next collective escape to the utopia that awaited, sparkling and spotless, atop the luxurious decks of The Serenity.

A strange silence fell over the bustling throng as the last guests came aboard to mixed laughter and shouts. All eyes were drawn to the starboard side, where a towering figure appeared on the bridge wing, illuminated by the scarlet light of daybreak.

Captain Jack Sterling created a craggy figure against the blazing orb, peering out at guests and vessels alike through flint-like eyes that hinted at storm-battered depths. Though his demeanour remained calm and efficient as he examined the situation, an atmosphere of coiled tension clung to his slim figure, a strong energy that may have originated from riddles from his past.

What personal issues prompted this lone wolf to wander the seas in self-imposed exile, avoiding all ports save those of business? What shadows lingered in his blazing pits of vision—the stiff chords of his sun-hardened neck? Only the rising sun appeared to contain the answers, as it limned Sterling's chiselled features in a flaming tapestry, unveiling new secrets and piquing the passengers' collective interest.

Sterling offered the tiniest nod after a long, contemplative pause. His crew jumped into action like well-trained dogs, throwing out lines as the engines hummed to life. Even when The Serenity broke free of the pier and veered gracefully into the open seas, their master's face remained stoic but vigilant, enslaving the passengers. And thus the expedition began, under intense and perplexing surveillance...

As The Serenity sailed away from the port, her fortunate passengers started to mingle and emerge, like colourful diamonds dropped across spreading velvet.

Sara Chang, a slender Asian lady pacing the aft deck in concentration, was the first to appear on the deck. Despite her youth, her hard emerald eyes and business-like dress revealed a mind that was never at ease. Whispers said that she was a well-known criminologist looking for a break from a recent horrific case.

Marcus Whitman, a tall Westerner radiating riches and intrigue in equal measure, sat nearby. Polished loafers hung over the ivory railing as he flipped through paperwork through narrowed sunglasses, disguising eyes that had seen buried depths. This wealthy guy seemed to be pursued by unidentified shadows.

Maria Hernandez, beautiful on a sofa under cascading silks, shone the brightest of all. Her radiant personality and siren's charm shone through her olive complexion and raven curls as she spun stories and laughed with fascinating hands, lighting up all corners of the deck.

Finally, Thomas Johnson stood firm on the aft rail. Despite being retired, the detective's seasoned irises missed nothing, conserving knowledge gained over decades of duty. Lines around his lips and eyes spoke of experience, as did the mysteries that remained unsettled underneath his hoary, introspective countenance.

What intrigues and convergences may occur if personalities and histories interact on this floating arena? For the time being, only the depths and the day had answers.

The Serenity's exclusive passengers started invading the vessel's sumptuous depths as she cut smoothly over sparkling waters beneath whirling gulls.

The walls of the grande salon were fashioned of various materials ranging from satin to polished oak, capturing flashes of excellent quality throughout. Plush divans and ottomans beckoned, while ancient tables moaned under decanters of excellent amber liquor. A crystal chandelier glowed above, casting shattered rainbows over the tuxedoed crew as they floated among the arrivals delivering flutes and hors d'oeuvres.

Elsewhere, the eyes were drawn to the gourmet kitchen's marble finish and glimpses of smoked glass doors that protected magnificent chambers. Luxurious details abounded with nary a smudge or fray—from velvety carpets that caressed bare feet to silky sheets that rustled in the slightest night wind.

The mixing increased gradually as clinking glasses and bursts of laughter coloured the air, combining with the ship's quiet purr. This floating game was all about leisure and indulgence—a week-long getaway where fancies reigned supreme and anxieties dissipated in the wave. For a chosen few who
