Marjane Satrapi and Why This Graphic Novel

Marjane Satrapi is an Iranian-born graphic novelist, illustrator, film director, and children's book author. Born in 1969 in Rasht, Iran, and raised in Tehran, Satrapi's life and experiences during the tumultuous years of the Iranian Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War form the foundation of Persepolis.

    Background of the Author:

Family and Early Life: Satrapi was born into an educated and progressive family. Her parents were politically active and supported Marxist causes. This environment exposed her to political discussions and the importance of individual rights and freedoms from a young age.

Education and Departure from Iran: Due to the oppressive regime and the country's societal constraints, especially on women, Satrapi's parents sent her to Vienna, Austria, to continue her education at the age of fourteen. This decision was both protective and a bid to offer her a broader world perspective.

Return to Iran and Later Life: After her stint in Europe, where she faced various challenges, including homelessness and navigating a different culture, Satrapi returned to Iran. She studied visual communication at Islamic Azad University in Tehran. Later, she moved to France, where she currently resides. In Paris, she attended L'École Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, where she studied illustration.

Career: Besides Persepolis, Satrapi has worked on several other graphic novels and films. Some of her works include Chicken with Plums and Embroideries.

    Why She Wrote Persepolis:

Personal Catharsis: The act of recounting one's personal history can serve as a means of understanding and processing traumatic events. Persepolis gave Satrapi a platform to explore her past and the myriad emotions tied to it.

Challenge Stereotypes: Satrapi often mentioned in interviews that one of her main motivations for writing Persepolis was to challenge the Western world's monolithic view of Iran and
