The Pride of the Turf
Narayani V Manapadam
The innards of my forehead began to pound like the rhythmic drumming of thousands of hooves. I looked up. The inky firmament was dotted with millions of twinkling stars. The round moon cast its silvery beams on the sprawling turf, coating it in a pristine shade of white. I winced, as I rolled onto my breastbone. My legs felt wobbly as I tucked them beneath my body. What was happening to me? As I racked my brain for possible answers, tiny atoms of glittering lights appeared before me, and started to swirl around like a leaf caught in a whirlpool.
Stop this right now!
I wanted to scream. But not a single sound emerged from my throat. It was as if my vocal cords had gone on an indefinite strike!
The silhouette of a whitish figure formed in front of my eyes. I snorted in glee as I recognized him. My master! On his lips hovered a benign smile. Memories came gushing in like a breached dam. How his chest used to swell with pride when I trotted to victory!
Get up, my sugar!
he whispered in that loving tone.
That was all I needed! I lifted my chest slightly and unfolded my legs. A stream of steady current gripped my exhausted body, invigorating it with a newfound fervour. I sat up, and before I could count to three, I was happily on my feet.
Yes! I did it! I cantered towards him, my head bobbing gently. I could smell the cube of sugar in his palm. I nickered as I began to chew on my treat. My master ran his hand over my glorious mane, patting it. I basked in his love. He threw his arms around my neck. It was then I felt something wet! Was he crying?
I am so sorry! Please forgive me, my love!
Tears streamed down his face, as he suddenly let go of me and went down on his knees. He clasped his hands and bent his head.
I stood there, feeling lost.
My master continued to mumble incoherently. Fat teardrops fell on the lush grass, making them gleam like pearls. A lump formed in my throat! He loved me! This thought filled me with unspeakable joy! Even in death, he had come to visit me! What more could I want in life?
A part of me wanted to break out into an impromptu jig. I wanted the gentle breeze to kiss me and listen to my delightful tale, and to carry it yonder. The whole world should know of the love this man had for his horse! The scintillating stars lit up my world. This was paradise!
As if on cue, the universe burst into a thunderous applause. Genteel gentlemen and lissom ladies filled up the racecourse. On their lips echoed just one name. Pride! My name! For I was indeed the pride of the Royal Calcutta Turf Club! I had won countless prizes for
