    Prologue

The Betrayal That Shattered Raven’s World

The golden rays of the setting sun painted the Elven city of Silverhaven in a warm, ethereal glow. The elegant spires and lush gardens of the royal palace stood as a testament to the enduring beauty and grace of the Elven people. Amidst this tranquil scene, Raven Shadowcloak, a young member of the Elven royal guard, stood vigilant at her post near the palace gates.

At a mere 80 years old, Raven was already regarded as one of the most promising recruits in the royal guard. Her innate talent for combat, combined with an unwavering loyalty and dedication to the crown, had earned her a reputation as a rising star among her peers. As she scanned the surroundings with her keen eyes, Raven couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride and purpose in her role as a protector of the realm.

Lost in thought, Raven’s mind drifted to memories of her childhood, when she would sit at her father’s feet and listen to tales of the brave warriors who had served the Elven kingdom for generations. She remembered the glint in his eyes as he spoke of honor, duty, and the unbreakable bond between the royal guard and the crown. It was those stories that had ignited a fire within Raven’s heart, a burning desire to follow in the footsteps of her ancestors and dedicate her life to the service of her people.

As Raven stood lost in her reverie, the sound of approaching footsteps pulled her back to the present. She turned to see her mentor, Taelar Swiftblade, striding towards her, his silver-streaked hair catching the fading light. Taelar had been a constant presence in Raven’s life since she had joined the royal guard, a guiding force who had taken her under his wing and molded her into the warrior she was today.

Raven straightened her posture and saluted Taelar as he drew near, a gesture of respect and admiration for the man who had taught her so much. At ease, Raven, Taelar said, his deep voice tinged with a warmth that belied his usually stoic demeanor. Walk with me.

As they made their way through the palace gardens, Raven couldn’t help but feel a sense of curiosity and anticipation. It was rare for Taelar to seek her out like this, especially with such an air of secrecy. She knew that whatever he had to say must be of great importance.

You’re probably wondering why I asked you here, Taelar began, his gaze fixed ahead as they walked. I have a mission for you, Raven. One that requires the utmost discretion and loyalty.

Raven nodded, her heart racing with excitement. Of course, sir. I’m ready for whatever task you have for me.

Taelar paused, turning to face Raven with an intensity in his eyes that she had never seen before. This isn’t just any mission, Raven. What I’m about to ask of you could change the course of our kingdom’s history.

He glanced around, ensuring they were alone before continuing, his voice low and urgent. I have reason to believe that there is a traitor within the palace walls. Someone close to the king, plotting to overthrow him and seize power for themselves.

Raven’s eyes widened in shock, a chill running down her spine at the thought of such treachery. In all her years as a royal guard, she had never imagined that someone within their own ranks could be capable of such betrayal.

How do you know this? she asked, her voice trembling slightly.

Taelar reached beneath his cloak and produced a small, ornate key. I’ve been investigating this matter for some time now, he explained, pressing the key into Raven’s palm. This key will grant you access to the royal archives. There’s a document there, a sealed scroll that holds the evidence we need to uncover the traitor’s identity.

Raven nodded, her fingers curling around the key as a sense of determination filled her. I understand, sir. I won’t let you down.

Taelar placed a hand on Raven’s shoulder, his grip firm and reassuring. I know you won’t, Raven. You’re the only one I can trust with this.

He leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a whisper. Meet me at the base of the Starlight Tower at midnight. Bring the scroll, and we’ll confront the traitor together.

With that, Taelar turned and strode away, leaving Raven alone with her thoughts. As the sun dipped below the horizon, she couldn’t shake the feeling that her life was about to change forever.

As midnight approached, Raven made her way to the base of the Starlight Tower, her heart pounding with a mixture of anticipation and fear. The tower loomed above her, its slender form reaching towards the heavens like a beacon of hope in the darkness.

Taelar was waiting for her, his face obscured by the shadow of his hood. Do you have it? he asked, his voice tight with tension.

Raven nodded, producing the sealed scroll from beneath her cloak. I do.

Taelar took the scroll, his fingers trembling slightly as he broke the seal and unrolled the parchment. His eyes scanned the contents, widening with each passing moment.

By the gods, he whispered, his voice filled with disbelief. It’s worse than I thought.

Raven leaned in, trying to catch a glimpse of the scroll’s contents. What does it say?

Taelar shook his head, rolling up the scroll and tucking it back into his cloak. Not here, he said, glancing around nervously. We need to get this information to the king immediately.

As they hurried through the palace halls, Raven couldn’t shake the feeling that something was amiss. Taelar seemed on edge, his movements jerky and his eyes darting from side to side as if he expected an attack at any moment.

Just as they reached the doors to the throne room, Taelar stopped abruptly, his hand gripping Raven’s arm with a force that made her wince. Raven, he said, his voice low and urgent. There’s something I need to tell you.

Raven looked up at her mentor, her brow furrowed in confusion. What is it?

Taelar’s eyes met hers, and for a moment, Raven thought she saw a flicker of regret in their depths. I’m sorry, he whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. I’m so sorry.

Before Raven could react, Taelar shoved her backwards, sending her sprawling to the ground. She looked up, her eyes widening in horror as she saw the glint of a blade in Taelar’s hand.

Taelar, she gasped, her voice barely above a whisper. What are you doing?

A cruel smile twisted Taelar’s features, transforming the man she had once trusted into a stranger. Oh, Raven, he said, his voice dripping with mockery. So naive, so trusting. Did you really think I brought you here to uncover a traitor?

Raven’s mind reeled, the pieces of the puzzle falling into place with sickening clarity. The secret meetings, the sealed scroll, the sense of unease that had plagued her all night... it had all been a trap.

You’re the traitor, she whispered, her voice trembling with betrayal and disbelief. But why? Why would you do this?

Taelar laughed, a harsh, bitter sound that echoed through the empty halls. Power, Raven. It’s always been about power. The king is weak, a relic of a bygone age. It’s time for a new order, a new ruler to lead the Elven people into a glorious future.

He took a step towards her, the blade in his hand glinting menacingly in the torchlight. And you, my dear Raven... you were just a pawn in my game. A scapegoat to take the fall when the time was right.

Raven’s hand reached for her own blade, but Taelar was faster. With a flick of his wrist, he sent a bolt of dark magic hurtling towards her, slamming her back against the wall with a sickening crack.

As consciousness faded, Raven heard Taelar’s voice, distant and mocking. Such a pity, he said, his footsteps receding into the darkness. You could have been great, Raven. But now... now you’ll be remembered as nothing more than a traitor to your own kind.

When Raven awoke, it was to the sound of clanking chains and the murmur of angry voices. She found herself in a dank, dimly lit cell, her wrists and ankles bound by heavy shackles.

As her eyes adjusted to the gloom, she saw a group of Elven guards standing outside her cell, their faces twisted with disgust and hatred. Among them was Taelar, his expression a mask of righteous indignation.

Raven Shadowcloak, one of the guards spat, his voice dripping with venom. You stand accused of high treason against the crown. How do you plead?

Raven’s mind raced, desperately trying to make sense of the events that had led her to this moment. She had been framed, that much was clear. But how could she possibly hope to prove her innocence when all the evidence pointed to her guilt?

I didn’t do it, she said, her voice hoarse and raw with emotion. I swear, I’m innocent. Taelar, he... he set me up.

Taelar stepped forward, his eyes glinting with malice. Lies, he hissed, his voice dripping with contempt. We found the king’s seal in your quarters, along with plans for his assassination. You were caught red-handed in the royal archives, stealing sensitive documents.

He leaned in closer, his breath hot against her face. The evidence against you is overwhelming, Raven. You’ll hang for this, and I’ll be there to watch you swing.

In that moment, something snapped inside Raven. A lifetime of training, of loyalty and devotion to the crown, all of it shattered by the betrayal of the man she had once called friend and mentor.

With a scream of rage, she lunged forward, straining against her chains with all her might. You bastard! she snarled, her eyes blazing with fury. I trusted you! I looked up at you! And you... you used me, betrayed me, all for your own selfish ambition!

Taelar just smiled, a cold, cruel twist of his lips. Oh, Raven, he said, his voice filled with mock pity. You always were too trusting for your own good.

He turned to the other guards, his voice ringing with authority. Take her to the interrogation chamber. I want a full confession, by any means necessary.

As the guards dragged her away, Raven thrashed and screamed, her cries of innocence and pleas for mercy echoing through the halls of the palace she had once called home.

In the days that followed, Raven endured unspeakable tortures at the hands of her captors. They beat her, burned her, subjected her to dark magics that tore at her mind and soul. Through it all, she clung to her innocence, refusing to confess to a crime she did not commit.

But as the pain and isolation took their toll, Raven could feel her resolve beginning to crumble. In her darkest moments, she found herself wishing for death, for an end to the suffering and the betrayal that had shattered her world.

It was in one of these moments, when all hope seemed lost, that Raven made a vow. A vow that would shape the course of her life from that day forward.

She would have her revenge on Taelar Swiftblade. No matter how long it took, no matter what she had to endure, she would make him pay for what he had done. She would clear her name, restore her honor, and see justice done, even if it meant sacrificing everything she had ever known.

And so, when the guards came to drag her before the king for her sentencing, Raven held her head high, a fire burning in her eyes that no amount of torture could extinguish.

Raven Shadowcloak, the king intoned, his voice heavy with sorrow and anger. You have been found guilty of high treason against the crown. The evidence against you is irrefutable, and your own silence condemns you.

He paused, his gaze boring into hers with an intensity that made her want to look away. By the power vested in me, I hereby sentence you to exile from the Elven kingdom, never to return on pain of death.

Exile. The word rang in Raven’s ears like a death knell. To be cast out from the only home she had ever known, cut off from the lifeblood of her people... it was a fate worse than death.

But as the guards led her away, Raven caught a final glimpse of Taelar’s face. He stood beside the king, his expression a mask of solemn duty. But in his eyes, Raven saw a flicker of triumph, a glint of satisfaction that sent a chill down her spine.

In that moment, she knew that her fate had been sealed long before she ever set foot in the royal archives. Taelar had planned this betrayal from the start, had used her as a pawn in his own twisted game of power and ambition.

And as the gates of Silverhaven closed behind her, Raven stepped out into the wilderness, a disgraced exile with nothing left to lose.

But deep within her heart, a new purpose had taken root. A purpose that would guide her through the darkest of nights and the most perilous of paths.

    Vengeance. Justice. Redemption.

These would be the watchwords of her new life, the fuel that would drive her forward into an uncertain future.

And though she did not know it then, that future would be filled with danger and
