About this ebook

Dr. Kate Turner is happy with her new life in Oak Falls, upstate New York. Working as a relief veterinarian at a small house-call practice, she truly enjoys helping her patients.

All that changes when client Claire Birnham is found dead, an apparent suicide. A talented artist, Claire had everything to live for: new job, Manhattan apartment, her Cairn terrier Toto. As feisty as the Wizard of Oz Toto, he and Claire were devoted. Kate can't imagine Claire simply abandoning her pet. Was her death murder?

Questions end in the police arresting young kennel helper Eugene. The fragile friendship between Kate and police officer Luke Gianetti frays as she ignores his advice and keeps asking questions. House calls provide gossip and clues, some helpful, some not so much, as she treats her animal patients. Did Claire's recent insurance windfall prove too tempting for her hard-working and hard-drinking mother? What does trouble in the art gallery where Claire worked signal? How huge a grudge did heavy metal rocker A.J. hold against high-school sweetheart Claire after she dumped him? Was Claire a threat to AJ's rich new girl?

Dr. Kate mixes real medicine with murder as she risks her life over Claire's death, aided by insights from a former fire investigator, aka her Gramps. Unleashed is as irresistible as Muzzled.

Predictable and unoriginal but a cute read nonetheless.

Shapeshifting clans with special abilities, fated mates and racist enemies have all been done before and Humphreys doesn’t add anything new to the mix. In fact, she seems to throw it all together into one big cauldron just to cover all her bases.

This is particularly evident in the world building. The Amovea are interesting and have potential but not enough information is provided concerning their origins, culture and norms. Moreover, they have too many abilities – telepathy, teleportation, pyrokinesis, shapeshifting – all in one character is truly excessive and leaves no room for unique characterization or development.

Malcolm and Sam have adequate chemistry but their romance is uninspired. Malcolm has an almost gothic sophistication but never manages to completely pull it off perhaps because he more beta than alpha in comparison to the almost larger than life Prince of the Amoveo. Although Sam is wary of Malcolm and the new life that he represents, she is too accepting of the drastic changes that occur relatively quickly. Nevertheless, she is strong and independent and handles Malcom’s overbearing and possessive tendencies very well even though this ultimately gets her into trouble.

The suspense plot is also weak. To begin with there are too many villains and none are particularly scary or chilling. The ex-boyfriend stalker is more smarmy than creepy, the Cadeo hunter is slightly better in this area but ultimately comes across as spineless and weak-willed, and the silent partner is so obvious at one point that the “revelation” at the end is completely superfluous.

The secondary characters are decent particularly the grandmother and the butler. However, they remind me of the identical characters in Elizabeth Hunter’s A Hidden Fire but without the personality and wit. The other Amoveo members are, however, interesting enough for me to continue with the series.

Eileen Brady's Unleashed is an excellent mystery! An engaging protagonist (who happens to be a veterinarian), well-drawn secondary characters, descriptive locations and a complex plot drew me in immediately and had me turning pages eagerly.Although this is the second book in the series, it's not at all hard to pick up the relevant events from the first book, and without any spoilers for it. I am now looking forward to reading the first book, too!The resolution does seem pretty abrupt, and somewhat coincidental -- she figures out the murderer, and, as if psychic, he shows up and tries to kill her. That made me pause. There is also a red herring that distracts one from the rest of the case, and it makes little sense once the plot congeals.Still, the plot mostly makes sense, even in retrospect -- and I value that, since too many mysteries do NOT manage this! In short, it's a fun mystery, and I recommend it to people who enjoy such.I received this book in exchange for writing an honest review.

Dr. Kate Turner is a vet filling in for the permanent vet in a small town. She is kept busy treating a variety of animals & illnesses. She received news that her friend Claire Birnham had committed suicide. She’s in shock. She decided to investigate because she didn’t believe that her friend with such a zest for life could have taken her own life.“Every once in a while you meet someone so full of life they sweep you up with their enthusiasm. Claire was like that.”“The news about Claire struck me as bewildering & inexpressibly sad. The living may ask why, but the dead don’t answer.”There are many twists & turns in this story & a supply of suspects, even though the police seem to latch on to the least likely of them, an employee of the vet’s office, Eugene.“‘Eugene would never harm anything he loved.’ My instincts told me that was true. The Eugene I worked with never showed any anger toward any animal or person he worked with.”Can Dr. Kate solve this mystery before the killer ends her life?I gave this mystery five stars because the characters were well drawn & it kept me guessing. I will look for more of Eileen Brady’s books.Thank you to NetGalley & Poisoned Pen Press for the free kindle copy to review. This did not influence my opinion of the book.

Dr.Kate Turner is just minding her own business and getting on with life after her adventures in Muzzled, first book in the series, when she learns that one of her clients has committed suicide or is it murder? That is what Dr.Kate wants to figure out, much to the consternation of her grandfather and Luke, a detective friend of Kate's. She does manage to get information out of both Gramps and Luke as the case takes a decided turn, in that Claire, the dead woman, was murdered and did not kill herself. So once again, Kate finds herself involved in a murder investigation. This one involves many different characters, A.J., a former high school sweetheart of Clair's, Gilda, the gallery owner that Clair worked at, and Russian artist Andrei. As the clues pile up, it is a matter of time before Kate figures out who killed Claire and why. Dr.Kate is nothing if not persistent so she will finally figure it out. There is enough mystery, humor, animals and a glimpse into the art world to keep the lover of a cozy mystery wanting more. I enjoyed this story, I give it a 4, only because I found the ending anti climatic. Once the reader found out who the murderer was, the ending was quick. Like I said before, in spite of that, I did enjoy the story and will probably go find the first of the series, Muzzled, and learn more about Dr.Kate and her relationship with Luke.I received an uncorrected copy of the book from Poisoned Press and was not monetarily compensated for my review.

Unleashed by Eileen Brady is the second book in the Kate Turner, DVM Mystery series. Kate Turner moved to Oak Falls, New York to work as a veterinarian at Oak Falls Veterinary Hospital. The owner, Doc Anderson, wanted to take time off to go on a cruise around the world. Kate has a cute dog named Buddy who is well taken care of by Kate. Kate is often mistaken for a relative of Meryl Streep’s (which can be used to her advantage upon occasion). Kate is taking care of Claire Birnham’s little dog named Toto. Toto is a Cairn terrier who only likes Eugene Scruggs. Eugene is a young man who was injured in an accident and is now mentally challenged (but very nice, sweet, and hardworking). The next day Kate hears that Claire committed suicide. Kate knows that Claire would not kill herself. She just got a new job in New York, was enjoying her art, and was going to look at apartments in the city. Kate decides to look into the matter despite protests from Gramps and Luke Gianetti (her friend on the police force). Kate will have to fit in sleuthing around her patients (they even make house calls)! There is quite a list of suspects and someone does not want the truth to come out. Then when Eugene is arrested for the crime (it was finally deemed not a suicide), Kate knows she will have to prove his innocence. Kate will have to watch herself if she wants to stay alive and find Claire’s killer. Unleashed is charming cozy mystery. I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars. The mystery was of medium difficulty. The author provided great clues that aids the reader in solving the mystery. The book has interesting characters especially Kate’s assistant, Mari. I liked the humor that was sprinkled throughout the book. It was just the right amount (some books go over the top with the humor). I look forward to reading more books in this series.I received a complimentary copy of Unleashed from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The review and opinions expressed are my own.

Eileen Brady has a light, humorous touch that makes her books very enjoyable to read. Kate's voice is curious, casual, determined... and her retired fire investigator of a grandfather keeps her grounded when she becomes too embroiled in her investigations. Kate certainly does need to be reined in from time to time because her investigatory style is what I call "stir the pot." Many people don't react well to it, including her boyfriend. For me, a weakness in this series is that-- with the exception of Kate's grandfather-- all the secondary characters are a bit flat. They need to be fleshed out more, and the grandfather needs to make a few more appearances for this series to really shine. What keeps me coming back for more are the animals and Brady's stories of them and their owners. She knows whereof she speaks, having been a veterinarian for over twenty-five years. Her portraits of both owners and pets glow with humor and affection. An added bonus is that animal lovers reading these mysteries will be able to glean tips on how to care for their own pets. This is certainly a series to keep on your radar.

    Fast paced and entertaining

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Such a great adventure between real life people and the legendary shifters, Amoveo. Meet Malcolm and follow him as he searches for his mate, Samantha. Sam has had enough of the big city and returns home ,back to her grandmother's house. Malcolm lives next door and has been waiting for Samantha, she catches him watching her from the window. He needs to tell her she is also part Amoveo and his mate, but there is also danger, someone wants them dead. Come along and find out out what happens to them, you won't be disappointed.

Samantha has been having some strange dreams. Some involve a voice urging her to come home and in others she’s running on the beach as a wolf with a golden eagle flying along with her. It’s even more disturbing for her to discover Malcolm, living next door to her grandmother, immediately attracts her, yet he can speak to her telepathically and has a whole lot of abilities that are freaking her out; and he’s telling her she’s just like him.Danger comes in the form of the Caedo family that knows of the Amoveo and has made it their mission to wipe them off the face of the planet. They’ve been quiet for awhile now, but it soon becomes apparent that they’re watching Samantha. When it comes to the abilities of the shifters in this romance series, some of it seems familiar from other author’s writings on both vampires and shifters, and yet some of it is definitely unique. The unique abilities are a combination of interesting as well as somewhat over the top.The romance itself, while happening fast, works due to the telepathic abilities of the species and the need to be in each other’s head. And it’s not only words, but actions, that give it a feeling of warm intimacy even before we reach a sex scene. I like Samantha and her need for independence and privacy, as well as Malcolm who is willing to give her the privacy she needs, even though it’s difficult for him.

Sara Humphreys has taken a fresh approach to shapeshifter paranormal romance in UNLEASHED. Her world of the Amoveo race is unique. There are ten Amoveo clans of shapeshifters, including wolves, bears, foxes and eagles. Not only do they shapeshift from human to animal, they have other special abilities like telepathy. The Amoveo live unnoticed among humans, except for one group called the Caedo. The Caedo are their ancient enemies set to destroy them all.

The author did a wonderful job introducing the reader to the Amoveo world with Malcolm and Samantha's story. Malcolm knows that among his kind, he is predestined to have one mate. If he does not find her, he will never have offspring, and he will die young. He knows that Sam is his mate, yet she has no idea that she is a hybrid, half Amoveo wolf, half human. He visits Sam in her dreams, hoping to open her mind to his world.

UNLEASHED started a bit slow, but really picked up about half-way though. Sam and Malcolm were likable characters that I could easily connect with. Malcolm wasn't overly "alpha" in his behavior, which I think is what Sam needed to accept the situation. In addition to the romance between Malcolm and Sam, there is a mystery too. Someone is trying to kill Sam, and it's up to Malcolm to keep his mate safe. I enjoyed trying to figure out who was out to get her. It was not who I expected at all!

UNLEASHED is a solid start to a new and original PNR series. With ten different Amoveo clans, there is great potential for this series to really take off. I give UNLEASHED 3.75 out of 5 stars!

Since starting my blog I have discovered so many authors and books that I know I would not have come across otherwise. Whether it is through publishers, fellow bloggers or just being online more, I have found new genres and books that I have come to love. My favorite among these is paranormal romance. This genre continues to surprise me with all the different facets and has consumed my bookshelf. While Unleashed is a paranormal romance, it is not the typical format I have come to expect from this genre. Most paranormal romance books have the same basic makeup. They have a paranormal element, the main focus is usually just one couple that switches in each book in the series, there is villain looming in the distance that runs constant throughout the series and the male protagonists is usually an alpha male type. The alpha males are typically rough around the edges and can be crass, but in Unleashed, Malcolm should be categorized as a gentleman. He is still very much a take charge kind of guy and does not take orders easily, but he is more refined. I actually don’t think he cursed once in the book, which is not a negative; I am just so used to alphas being so domineering, it took me a little while to get used to Malcolm. The flip side to that is how incredibly patient and amazing Malcolm was with Samantha. In his culture, once you find your mate both parties accept the mating right away without issues. But Samantha has grown up thinking she was a human her entire life, so she does not accept the idea of having a mate easily. Poor Malcolm has been losing his powers and his mind looking for Samantha and if she rejects him, he will eventually die a slow painful death. Even with his life at stake, he never pushes her to choose him or live in his world. He goes slow with her, introducing her to his world a little chunk at a time and begins to gain her trust. I appreciated Sara showing us a different side to an alpha male and grew to love Malcolm and his compassion for Samantha. Their love does have a slow build to it, but their obvious passion for each other burned white hot. While I did enjoy a new take on shifters and learning about a new culture, I wished that Sara had given us a little more detail about how this species came to be and what life in their world is like. There were moments in the book where Malcolm talked to Samantha about their culture, but there was no dialogue, so we as the reader did not get to hear all the details. I love learning about new mythology and I really missed that in this book. This is the first book in this series though, so hopefully as it progresses we will get more insight into how this group of shifters lives and where and how they originated. There were a couple of pages in the book where we get into the mind of the villain briefly, which I always find interesting. I had a couple of ideas about who the bad guy was, but Sara did pull out a few of surprises towards the end. I obviously cannot reveal the identity of the villains, but I know this revelation will rock the Amoveo world and will have repercussions in future books.I have to mention Samantha’s friend Kerry. We don’t see her until later in the book, but I fell in love with her instantly. She has a sarcastic sense of humor and a realistic outlook on life that I appreciated. I am excited that she is going to be the focus for the next book along with, Dante who we get to see briefly when he is helping protect Samantha. I always like getting a preview of future couples so I have some idea of where the overall story is going to go next. It also helps us to get to know the characters better and how they fit into this world. I already love Kerry, so I am sure I will enjoy reading about how she gets involved in the Amoveo world in the future.Overall, I think this is a great start to a new interesting series. It was a good solid read, but I was not blown away by it. I wished we learned more about the mythology and had some of the characters developed just a little more. However, I had a smile on my face when I finished the book. The overall romance was just so sweet and I really enjoyed Samantha and Malcolm’s courtship. Samantha was so precious to Malcolm and he handled her with extreme care at every turn, even when she was fighting him. I am very interested to see where Sara is going to take this story next when the next book, Untouched, is released next year.

Samantha has had enough of New York. Enough of not selling her art and enough of not finding Mr. Right, so she moves back home. She has definitely noticed some changes. Like her sexy neighbor Malcolm.Malcolm tells her of the shape-shifting Amoveo clans and it seems unbelievable to her. That they really exists and she is one of them. An Amoveo hasn't been attacked or killed since Sam's parents. But with her return she's in much danger. The enemy has their sights set on both her and Malcolm.I'm a sucker for true mate stories and this one sucked me right in. Unleashed is a story of dreams and shape-shifters. Both Samantha and Malcolm were great characters to read about. Their romance was sweet and passionate. An enthralling story. One of the things I enjoyed was that the author didn't just stick with one animal. The Amoveo Clans shape-shifters are all different kinds of animals. Sure keeps things interesting. Ms. Humpreys has created a fantastic world, a unique one too. Her world will leave you wanting more.
