    The game of chess.

    Chess is a game with a rich history that spans over 1500 years, with its origins often traced back to India, around the 6th century AD. Originating from earlier versions of forms of the game, one of the earliest was called Chaturanga, was much like the chess we know today but was played on an 8x8 grid board with pieces that closely resemble modern chess pieces, each with its own set of movements. Chaturanga is considered a precursor to several strategic board games that evolved in different parts of the world.

    Over the years, the game made its way to Persia, where it became known as Shatranj. The Persians introduced two significant changes or variants: the names of some pieces and the starting phrase Shah Mat (the King is helpless), from which the term checkmate derives. When the Islamic conquest of Persia took place, chess spread across the Islamic caliphates, reaching parts of Europe through both the Iberian Peninsula and the Byzantine Empire.
