Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi, commonly known as Rumi, was one of the most revered and influential Persian poets, mystics, and scholars of the 13th century. His life and works have left an indelible mark on literature, spirituality, and philosophy, transcending cultural and geographical boundaries to inspire generations around the world.

Born on September 30, 1207, in Balkh, a city located in present-day Afghanistan, Rumi belonged to a family of learned scholars and theologians. His father, Baha Walad, was a renowned theologian and jurist, and from an early age, Rumi was immersed in the world of religious study and spiritual contemplation.

At the age of around 25, Rumi's life took a dramatic turn when his family was forced to flee their homeland due to the threat of invasion by the Mongols. They embarked on a lengthy journey that eventually led them to settle in Konya, Anatolia (modern-day Turkey), which was then part of the Seljuk Empire. It was in Konya that Rumi would spend the rest of his life and produce his most significant works.

In Konya, Rumi became a prominent scholar and theologian, holding prestigious positions within the religious community. He inherited his father's position as a professor of religious sciences at the Madrasah (theological school) in Konya, where he gained a reputation for his scholarly expertise and spiritual insight.

However, Rumi's life was forever changed by his encounter with the enigmatic mystic and wandering dervish, Shams al-Din Tabrizi. Shams, whose name means Sun, became Rumi's spiritual mentor and closest companion, igniting in him a profound spiritual awakening and transforming him from a respected scholar into a passionate seeker of divine truth.

The intense and transformative friendship between Rumi and Shams is legendary, characterized by long hours of ecstatic conversation and spiritual communion. Shams challenged Rumi to look beyond the confines of conventional religious orthodoxy and to delve into the depths of the human soul in search of God's presence.

The disappearance of Shams under mysterious circumstances in 1247 plunged Rumi into a profound state of grief and longing, which would become the catalyst for his poetic outpourings. In his anguish and yearning for reunion with his beloved spiritual guide, Rumi began to compose the verses that would later form the heart of his magnum opus, the Masnavi or Mathnawi.
